Love trees? Want to help protect them from invasive pests? BECOME A WASP WATCHER ! More info at www.cerceris.info The Problem • Exotic Wood-boring Beetles like the EMERALD ASH BORER (EAB) can be devastating pests of forests and landscapes • The EAB has killed millions of ash trees in the Midwest and is headed our way David Cappaert, Michigan State University, Bugwood.org • Early detection could help us to control this menace • But, there are currently no good detection methods for EAB A Solution ? • Cerceris fumipennis is a HARMLESS native wasp that specializes in hunting Wood-boring beetle adults • Females forage for beetles in trees and bring them back to nest holes in the ground • An observer can easily watch a wasp colony and ‘steal’ beetles from the returning wasps • If EAB is in the area, the wasps will bring it to you! Adopt a Colony! Connecticut has many C. fumipennis colonies. We are looking for volunteers to monitor colonies. Each dot is a wasp colony, which one will be yours? What would you do? • Contact Claire.Rutledge@ct.gov • Attend a training workshop in July • Monitor your colony for 3 sunny mid-days in July or August • ‘Steal’ beetles from wasps and send them to Claire for ID • All equipment will be provided FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!!
