Psalm 115:8 • 8 They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them. • Men mold idols then idols mold men • Foolish (brainless) TLB • makes inanimate object then believes it lives • Rom. 1:21-22 • Carnal (value is purely monetary) • idolater seeks only fleshly rewards • Rom. 1:23-25
Idols Molding Men • Foolish, Carnal, • Corrupt (physical and spiritual) • idol has no soul, no morals, no spiritual values • Rom. 1:26-28 • Inactive (idol can’t do for itself) • Judges 6:31 Joash regarding Baal • 1 Sam. 5:3 Dagon before the ark • Unresponsive to requests 1 Kings 18:27
Men Molding Idols • Idol is anything that replaces God in mind • It comes between us (rich young ruler) • Covetousness is idolatry (Col. 3:5) • God remains with many in the background • Israel knew how to return to God • Accept God but won’t give up smoking, drinking, adulterous marriage, laziness...
Men Molding Idols • An imagined god that steals God’s identity • All powerful to provide and reward but not to punish • Reveals will in agreeable scriptures • Americanized (accepts value system of our nation as it digresses) • Available (not particular about praise)
Imitate What’s Admired • Christianity (followers of Christ) • Acts 4:13 they had been with Jesus • 2 Pet. 1:4 partakers of Divine nature • Idolatry (man becomes what he idolizes) • Human (celebrity) • copy, quote, dress, manners… • all money, time, and energy given • image believed while reality is concealed • blindly dedicated, following every suggestion
Imitate What’s Admired • Objects that possess us: • Electronics (internet) • believe we have all the answers (science) • connected (not to God or those near you) • badge (wealth, wisdom, and with it) • Teenage boy’s first car • American attitude toward Money • great enabler (believe we can do all)
Imitate What’s Admired • Activities substituted for Worship • Work (married to the job) • Self worth tied to job performance • Forsake all else to build the company • Amusement (recreation and entertainment) • Vacation from the Lord • Miss p.m. worship for sports • Attend when nothing else is scheduled
Tradition • Mindless acceptance of what is handed down from parents and grandparents • Idol maker puts idol as number one and holds God in the background (attend) • Child accepts idol as all and drops God from the background (never obeys Gospel) • Dad worked overtime and son takes a job that requires him to work every Sunday
