Psalm 8:4-6 • V. 4. “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? • V. 5. “For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. • V. 6. “Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet:
Psalm 8:7-9 • V. 7. “All sheep and oxen, Yea, and the beasts of the field; • V. 8. “The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. • V. 9. “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!”
Observations • A Psalm of praise to God. Cf. vs 1,9. • Portions of this psalm quoted in N.T. • 8:2: “out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength,” Matthew 21:15-16. • 8:4-5, “what is man….” Hebrews 2:6-8. • Our primary emphasis based on v. 4, “what is man that thou art mindful of him?”
“When I consider the heavens, the work of thy fingers..” • David had been a shepherd, I Samuel 17:34-37; later king over Israel, 2 Sam. 7:8. • As a shepherd, David had occasion to observe the beauties and marvels of God’s creation, Psalm 19:1; 23:1-4. • The heavens..moon and stars, “the work” of God’s “fingers,” Psalm 8:3
“What is man that thou artmindful of him,” 8:4? • What is man when viewed alongsidethe heavens?? • Yet God is “mindful” of man! • He visited man, 8:4. cf. James 1:27. • Crowned man with “glory and honor,” 8:5; Genesis 1:26-27. • Made man to have “dominion over the work” of His hands, 8:6-8; Genesis 1:28.
“What is Man?” • Man is composed of two parts. • Spirit, Gen. 2:7; Eccl. 12:7; Matthew 16:26; 2 Corinthians 5:1-4. • Body, Genesis 2:7; Eccl. 12:7; James 2:26; cf. Acts 2:31; John 18:30; 19:40-41. • Man is a sinner! • Romans 3:9-10,23; 14:23; I John 5:17; 3:4; James 1:13-15. • Sin separates man from God, Isaiah 59:1-2.
“What is man?” (con’t) • Man is a Dying creature! • Eccl. 9:5; I Cor. 15:22; Hebrews 9:27. • “And he died” was the common conclusion to the lives in Gen. 5:5-31. • Man is of few days! • Job 14:1; 7:6; Ps. 90:9; 102:15; Jas. 4:14. • Man is the target of Satan! • Genesis 3:1-6; I Pet. 5:8; 2 Cor. 2:11.
“What is man?” (con’t) • Man is the object of God’s love! • John 3:16; Romans 5:8. • Man’s duty and purpose is to glorify God! • Ecclesiastes 12:13-14; I Peter 4:16.
God’s Mindfulness of Man • God does not want anyone to be lost! • Ezekiel 33:11; 1 Timothy 2:3-4; 2 Pet. 3:9. • God sent His Son to make possible our salvation! • Note the application in Heb. 2:6-9,14. • Jesus did not come to earth to redeem Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, the earth, etc. • Some day the universe will be destroyed, but we will exist eternally!
God’s Mindfulness of man (continued) • Jesus purchased the church with His own blood! • Matthew 16:18; Acts 20:28; Ephesians 5:25; Acts 2:47; Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:16. • God gave us a Book by which we should live! • Titus 2:11-12; 2 Peter 1:3; 2 Timothy 3:16-17. • God revealed the plan for our Salvation! • Luke 19:10; John 8:24; Luke 13:3; Matthew 10:32; Mark 16:15-16. • Consider the examples of conversions in Acts.
God’s Mindfulness of Man! (Continued) • God has given us ample Warnings lest we Neglect to do His Will! • I Peter 4:17-18; John 12:48; Matt. 25:46. • God, through His Son, invites us to partake of Eternal Life! • John 14:6; Matthew 11:28-30; Revelation 22:17.
Conclusion: • From the standpoint of man’s dominion over the works of God’s hands, it is evident that God has been “mindful” of us! • From the standpoint of the great sacrifice of Jesus, and the blessings of heaven, it is evident that God is still “mindful” of us! • How can we spurn that kind of love??
