Who can provide training for apprentices? • A CFA (Centre de Formation pour Apprentis) • A private institution (an association, a company…) • A chamber of commerce and industry • A chamber of crafts • State organisations (comprehensiveschools, universities…)
How does a CFA work? • It gets subsidies from the Regionalcouncil • It collects back the apprenticeship taxes paid by the partnercompanies
A CFA has to: • Provide the apprenticewith a free and appropriate training • Be involved in the follow-up of the apprentice • Be constantly in touch and workcloselywith the partnercompanies (absences) • Inform the apprentice about his/herrightslegal-wise • Prepare the apprentice to the exam • Ensure high graduation rates
The apprentice has to: • Be fullyinvolved in the position held in the company • Respect the companypolicy and its code of conduct • Respect the rules of the training center • Carry out the tasksdictated by the employer • Act as an employee • Take the final exam
The working hours of an apprentice: Age Hours per day Hours per week Days off per week Under 18 8h max 35h max 2 consecutive days 18 and over 10h max 35h + overtime minimum 1 day

The role of the Regional Councils in the apprenticeship system • To define the apprenticeshipmap of trainings in the region • To Provide the CFA with a financial help • To support the employerswithfinancial subsidies (€1,000 per year)
The role of the government in the apprenticeship system • To support financially the employers by grantingthem the exemption • of social security and employers’contribution, as well as taxcredit • minimum €600/per apprentice
Now a few figures in the Rhône-Alps region in 2010… • 61 regional CFAs • 40,670 apprentices • About 75 % get a job • €200M in organisation expenses and investment (12% of the regional budget)
Four sectors of activities are stronglyrepresented in apprenticeship in the Rhône-Alpsregion
