Definition and Purpose • Definition of Description: 1) To tell or depict in written or spoken words; an account of 2) To represent or delineate by a picture or figure. • Purpose of Description: Seeks to describe an object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation, etc. The goal of description is to paint an image that is vivid and moving in the mind of the reader.
Elements of Descriptive Essays • Clear and Concise Language: Words are chosen carefully, particularly for their relevancy in relation to that which the author intends to describe. • Vivid language: “Sprinted” rather than “Ran”, “Sauntered” rather than “Walked”. Avoid adverbs. • Appeal to all five senses. • More likely to include thoughts and emotions.
Other Elements? • Thesis: There can be a thesis in a descriptive essay. The author can describe something for a reason and often does so. There can be essays without a “thesis”, however, one’s that choose to describe for its own sake. • The distinction between introduction, body, and concluding paragraphs are blurred or nonexistent. • Evidence has been replaced by details. • Conclusion: Like the thesis, a conclusion, implied or stated is common in descriptive essays, but not necessary. The nature of the more creative essays leaves more room for open ended musings and creative expression.
