IDOT’s Division of Public and Intermodal Transportation Mission: Supports public and specialized transportation throughout Illinois by providing technical support and financial resources to local governments, public and specialized transportation operators, and rail operators. Main Roles and Responsibilities: Oversight and administrative management of state and federal funding for transit and rail studies; Administer several federal public and specialized transportation programs; Provide financial support to transportation agencies and mass transit districts throughout the state; and Maximize the amount of federal funds received in Illinois for transit and rail projects.

Rail Transportation Project of Regional Significance: • Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency Program (CREATE) • $1.5 B rail infrastructure upgrade • Public-Private Partnership • Key Program Components: • 25 grade separations • "flyovers" at six rail-to-rail crossings • replacing outdated tracks and switches • Installing better train control mechanisms 32 of 78 projects will be in design or construction by 2009
Public Transportation Project of Regional Significance: Human Service Transportation Plans (HSTP) New federal mandate to identify and recommend regional and local strategies that encourage the most effective use of available transportation services to enhance mobility for the region’s older adults, persons with disabilities and individuals with lower incomes. Connecting Communities through Coordination RTA’s planning effort to address the new federal mandate for northeastern Illinois.
