3. Shakespeare: Biography- Early Life • He was born in 1564 • Parents: John & Mary Shakespeare • His father was a local businessman who made leather goods. He also was a member of the town council • His mother inherited her father’s estate when he died. • He had seven siblings, but only five survived through childhood. • Shakespeare most likely attended grammar school, but it is assumed he did not attend college. The Globe Theater • Erected in 1598 by Shakespeare’s theater company. • It was an open-air theater and three stories high. • Had a capacity of 3,000 audience members. • In 1613, the original Globe Theatre burned to the ground. • A cannon shot during a performance of Henry VIII set the building on fire. The Globe Theater • The company constructed a new theater before Shakespeare’s death. • In 1642, the Puritans had the theater shut down. • The foundations of the theater were found in 1989, and a new Globe was constructed in 1993 and it re-opened in 1996.
