ERAS in review – what is ERAS and how does it work? Created to reduce the amount of time spent on the residency application process by; Using the Internet to transmit electronic residency application documents from applicants and medical schools to residency program directors. ERAS is made up of four essential components . . .
ERAS: Who’s Who . . What’s What? • MyERASis your Internet “file” where you will: • complete your Common Application Form (CAF) • request Letters of Recommendation (LoRs) • order your COMLEX and/or USMLE scores • select programs and assign documents to the programs to which you are applying • ERAS PostOffice • Where all documents are received and transmitted to the programs
ERAS: Who’s Who . . What’s What? • School staff use the Dean’s Office Workstation to scan and store the transcripts, MSPEs and LORs. • Residency programs use the Program Director’s Workstation to download application material for review.
An Aerial ERAS View:Note that there is no direct connection between the schools and the programs; all transmissions are sent and received through the ERAS PostOffice
ERAS: Who’s Who . . What’s What? • CAF Common Application Form • Token Your key to your file • LOR Letters of Recommendation • MSPE Medical Student Performance Evaluation • NMS National Matching Service • ADTS Automatic Document Tracking System • DWS Dean’s Office Workstation • PDW Program Director’s Workstation
When can you get started? • Print and read the MyERAS User Guide for step by step instructions on using ERAS. • Complete your Token request any time; it will be distributed July 1 by the Office of Student Affairs. • Request letters of recommendation (LORs) • No more than four (4) letters may be assigned to any individual program • Call or e-mail The Office of Student Affairs whenever you want an update on how many letters (LORs) we have received for you. • Check your grades online regularly • All of your documents are compiled as we receive them
What’s it gonna cost? ERAS (2009) Fees Up to 10 $60 11-20 $ 8 each 21-30 $15 each 31 or more $25 each • MyERAS automatically calculates your fees based on the number of programs applied to per specialty. • The NBME fee for transmitting USMLE/ NBME transcripts for U.S. and Canadian applicants to programs is $60, regardless of the number of transcripts requested.
Preparing for ERAS Personal Statement • Think about what items you want to include in your Personal Statement • You can create one personal statement for each specialty or for a specific program. Your personal statement is where you may want to convey any special circumstances or your uniqueness to program directors. • You will be uploading your personal statement. Curriculum Vitae • Make sure we get a copy of your CV to draft your MSPE. • You will not upload a CV to your MyERAS. The “CV” is nothing more than the CAF formatted in a different manner for the benefit of those programs that prefer to view a CV format. The CV is provided as a report so you can see how your information will be formatted. Review our Student Affairs ERAS website for a preview of what’s to come.
