3D seismic data – keys to success • Good quality data • Integrated, accurate database • Multidisciplinary integration (runs from seismic acquisition planning to reservoir management • Clear understanding of capabilities and limitations of seismic methods and software/hardware limitations • Insight and flair – having the geological knowledge and skills to apply them to the seismic interpretation
3D seismic data – interpreter constraints • Lack of time-depth information/data • Lack of sonic data (creation and application of synthetic seismograms) • Poor-quality seismic data • Lack of survey information • Lack of geological input • Lack of engineering input • Software/hardware limitations
3D seismic data - advantages • A common misconception is that 2D seismic data is relatively useless in the analysis of sedimentary basins inspite of the fact the majority of hydrocarbon fields in the world were discovered with 2D seismic data! • Admittedly 2D seismic data suffers from spatial aliasing which is greatly reduced if using 3D seismic data (see Cartwright & Huuse, 2005).
