15. 3D seismic data - advantages • A common misconception is that 2D seismic data is relatively useless in the analysis of sedimentary basins inspite of the fact the majority of hydrocarbon fields in the world were discovered with 2D seismic data! • Admittedly 2D seismic data suffers from spatial aliasing which is greatly reduced if using 3D seismic data (see Cartwright & Huuse, 2005).
