  1. Welcome to High School Orientation Felicia Martin – School Counselor felicia.martin@rcstn.net

  2. Graduation Requirement • EOC/TCAP Tests are administered at the end of the class session and counts 15%-25% of the student’s final grade for the semester.  • EOC/TCAP Tests in English 1, English 2, English 3, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, U.S History, Biology, Chemistry • Must take the ACT to graduate.  • Must take and successfully pass the TN Civics Test.

  3. English Requirements* • English 1 1 credit • English 2 1 credit • English 3 1 credit • English 4 1 credit or Dual English Credit through Volunteer State or Austin Peay.  Counts as English 1010 and English 1020 for College credit.

  4. Math Requirements • Math-4 Credits (students must take a math class every year) • Algebra 1: 1 credit • Geometry 1 credit • Algebra 2 1 credit • Upper level Math 1 credit **(Upper level Math options are on next slide) *If Alg 1 taken in 8th grade – student will move on to Geometry in 9th grade*

  5. Other Math Options for Year 4 • Bridge Math for students who have not earned a 19 on the ACT Math portion • Bridge SAILS through Volunteer State for students who score less than 19 on the ACT Math Portion and are going to a 4-year college. • STEM Math (Pre-Calculus, Advanced Calculus,  Statistics, DE Statistics, or Dual Enrollment College Algebra)

  6. Science & Social Studies Requirements Science-3 credits Physical Science /or additional lab science 1 credit Biology-1 credit Chemistry or Physics-1 credit Social Studies 3 credits World History & Geography- 1 credit U.S. History & Geography (Junior Year)- 1 credit Economics-½ credit Government-½ credit

  7. Fine Art, Foreign Language & Elective Focus • Fine Arts 1 credit • Foreign Language      2 credits • Elective Focus 3 credits • Students completing a CTE elective focus must complete three units in the same CTE program area of study. • Science, math, humanities, fine arts can also be an elective focus

  8. Other Requirements • Wellness 1 credit • P.E. ½ credit • Personal Finance ½ credit

  9. State GoalEvery senior to be a Ready Graduate by: • 21+ on ACT  or • 4 EPSOs  or • 2 EPSOs+Industry Certifications Or • 2 EPSOs+ASVAB *EPSO:  EARLY POST-SECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES

  10. Robertson County EPSO Opportunities • Dual Enrollment through Volunteer State Community College or Austin Peay State University to gain college/high school credit. • Accessing Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) to gain industry certification. • University of Tennessee Martin to gain college credit in the area of agriculture and/or academic dual credit. • Austin Peay State University Collaborative to gain an Associate's Degree while meeting high school graduation requirements.

Volunteer State Community College Dual Enrollment Opportunities • Must meet Vol. State enrollment requirements:  ACT: 19-Reading, 18-English, and 19-Math and 3.0 GPA • On-line and Face-to-Face courses available. • Face-to-Face courses are at ERHS. • Cost:  1st 4 courses are FREE.  Must maintain a B or above. Must take ALL 4 courses at Vol St for them all to be Free. • May enroll as a Junior or Senior. • See a school counselor to discuss course offerings. http://www.volstate.edu/highschool/

Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) • Eligibility requirements:  Good attendance, on-track for graduation and minor discipline infractions. • Requested industry certification area must have openings. • Industry certification would be pending completion of the program after high school. • Complete TCAT application with School Counselor. • Students must have transportation to TCAT campus. • Hours are 7:30-9:30 M-F (some areas may be able to attend until 10:30) – must pay for book & tools

University of Tennessee Martin • Must have a 3.00 GPA for admissions, no ACT requirement for agriculture courses. • Must have a 3.00 GPA and a 19 ACT Composite for admission into academic courses. • Courses delivered on-line through the University of Tennessee at Martin. • UT Martin provides the school counselors grade updates every 4 weeks. • Meet with a school counselor to discuss enrollment and course offerings.

  14. Austin Peay State University Collaborative- Associates Degree! • Entrance to APSU Collaborative:  Must have completed sophomore year, have a 3.0 GPA and score a 19+ on ACT Math/English/Reading portion.  • APSU Collaborative hosted at Highland Crest Campus in Robertson County. • Students may enroll in summer courses located at APSU or on-line. • Opportunity to earn 37-60 hours of Dual College credit that can be applied to an APSU degree or transferred to other colleges or universities.  • Transportation from school of zone to Highland Crest campus is provided and must be utilized. • Must see school counselor to complete application.

  15. ATTENDANCE • ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT TO EARNING CREDITS.  IF YOU ARE NOT IN CLASS THEN YOU CANNOT RECEIVE THE INSTRUCTION TO EARN CREDITS. • The State of Tennessee and Robertson County Board of Education adopted a policy where 8 unexcused tardies or early dismissals will equal 1 unexcused absences.  10 unexcused absences result in truancy charges.

  16. What is GPA? • A = 4 points • B = 3 points • C = 2 points • D = 1 point • F = 0 points • This is very important for class rank, university admissions, scholarships, etc. • Your GPA starts after your very first nine weeks (quarter 1) grades. • Ranking (the Board Policy-students taking 8 advanced classes will be ranked above those that do not) • Advanced Classes + 3 rigour points are added at the end of each nine weeks grade • Valedictorian ties are broken by EOC/TCAP scores (Algebra 1, English 2, Biology) and ACT scores. ** Beginning with the Class of 2021 – ACT will be the ONLY tie breaker for Valedictorian or Salutatorian.

To look at scheduling information (course catalogue, scheduling sheets, adv class policy, elective focus sheet and electives offered) • 3. Look at useful links for: homework help, ACT info, TN Scholar, TN Promise, Graduation requirements • 4. Look under Senior tab for: Scholarships, FAFSA info, TN Promise Schools, Senior Timeline, Civics test info, Teacher Recommendation form (under documents). • 5. Career Information, career searches, etc…..

  18. Freshmen/Sophomore Information • Keep your grades up! Your GPA now counts! • Begin recording information for college. You should document any clubs, activities or volunteer work. • Don’t miss school. • Think about your talents and strengths. What career will work with those? • If you struggle in a class ask your teachers for help. • Sophomores –take ACT in Spring if going to middle college next year or the Pre-ACT in Feb (sign ups in Jan – Cost $13) • Robertson Co Career Fair is Sept 18 5-7pm at the center in Springfield

  19. Junior Information • Start a list of colleges or trade schools you want to attend or research military or work options. • Order your class ring – Josten’s will be here in the fall • Sign up for the NCAA or NAIA if you want to play college sports • Go to the Robertson County Career Fair September 18 5-7pm • Take ASVAB for career exploration or to qualify for the Military Sept 17 (sign ups Aug) • Take the PSAT Oct 30 (sign ups Sept. Cost $17) to qualify for National Merit Scholarship. • Fill out the Job Shadow survey (December) • Prepare a challenging schedule for your senior year (Jan) • Job Shadow Day Feb • Take the ACT in March • Start Scholarship Searches & look at Financial Aid to prepare for senior year. • Spring/Summer – Set up college visits

  20. Senior Information • Sign up for the NCAA or NAIA if you want to play college sports • Fill out Early Grad, Partial Student and TN Scholar applications – These will be handed out during homeroom in August • ACT Counts – Sept 10 at Honeysuckle Farms (ACT Benchmarks-Math 22, Science 23, English 18, Reading 22 – Must meet 3 out of 4 to qualify) • Go to the Robertson County Career Fair September 18 5-7pm • Take ASVAB for career exploration or to qualify for the Military Sept 17 (Sign up Aug) • Begin applying for college or trade school – Apply to 3-5 schools minimum • Send your transcript to schools you have applied to – Get a transcript request from me • Take the ACT again in October at ERHS(TBA) • Go to 1st TN Promise Meeting Oct 8 @ 11:15 at ERHS • Apply for TN Promise – this will be done during homeroom – Deadline is Nov 1st • Start Scholarship Searches & look at Financial Aid – All Scholarships on my webpage • Fill out your FAFSA beginning in Oct – TN Promise FAFSA deadline Nov 1st • Attend Mandatory TN Promise Mtg March 30th 3-4:30 at ERHS • Report 8 hrs of Community Service to TN Promise by July 1st.
