Safe Routes Philly promotes biking and walking as healthy transport options. We prioritize schools near high-risk areas and conduct walkability audits to ensure safe routes. Through education, encouragement, and evaluation, we aim to make school routes safer for children.

  1. Promoting biking and walking as fun, healthy forms of transportation in Philadelphia Elementary Schools.

Last year Safe Routes Philly received a grant from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) to implement pedestrian safety education in schools near high crash intersections. • This year we are prioritizing schools that are within ¼ mile of 9 or more child pedestrians being struck by a driver

  3. Walkability Audits Assesspopular routes around schools noting traffic, infrastructure, and neighborhood safety concerns to help determine the safest routes to school for parents and children.

  5. Engineering An engineer assess routes to help identify infrastructure changes needed to increase safety

  6. Education 45 minute health and safety PE lessons which walk children through different street scenarios

  7. Encouragement • Walking School Bus • Walk and Bike to School Day • Walking and Biking Clubs

  8. Evaluation • Parent Survey • Student Travel Tallies

  9. Enforcement Work with the local police department to help enforce traffic safety in school zones
