Reading/Genre Units of Study Quarter 1: Making a Difference (focuses on foundational reading skills needed for the year) Quarter 2: Investigating & Discovering Personal Strengths (explores the meaning of personal character) Quarter 3: Love That Poem (poetry through the eyes of the reader and the poet) Quarter 4: Mysteries (read and discover the common characteristics of mysteries)
Writing/Genre Units of Study Quarter 1: Opinion Essay, Informational Essay* Quarter 2: Writing About Reading, Historical Fiction Quarter 3: Autobiographical Poem, Research Report* Quarter 4: Speech Writing (part of Simulated Congressional Hearing) *Information Essay and Research Report will be completed in Health or Science classes
Social Studies Units of Study Unit 1: The American Revolution • Founding of the Nation & The Declaration of Independence Unit 2: Building a New Nation • The Constitution Unit 3: A Nation in Conflict • War of 1812, Civil War, Civil Rights Movement Unit 4: We the People • Rights & responsibilities of citizens
Simulated Congressional Hearing When: Wednesday, May 24th @ FRES 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. What: During the SCH, students assume the roles of Constitutional experts and prepare speeches using supporting current events. They present these speeches before a panel of judges, followed by a question and answer session.
Homework • Assigned nightly (Monday-Thursday) • Vocabulary (students may choose an activity from the homework list or teachers may assign a specific paper) • Vocabulary quizzes are given weekly or bi-weekly (Students will be notified in advance) • Reading for at least 20 minutes • Does not have to be consecutive, may be broken up into smaller sections • Will increase by 5 minutes each quarter
How To Help Your Child • Be a literacy role model! Show your child reading and writing is an important part of your life. • Expose your child to a variety of texts and through different mediums (newspapers, magazines, digital print, etc.) • Discuss current events. • Ask your child about what they are reading. • Can they summarize the text? • Can they tell you about the characters?
