  2. Being in College • Pastoral Time • What is new as a College student? • Lesson allocation and the new timetable • Extra-curricular & Volunteering opportunities • Work vs. social time • UCAS

The Pastoral System • Tutor groups of around 10 students: 4 or 5 from College 1 and College 2 • 5 minute registration every morning • 15 minutes of tutor time on Monday, Wednesday& Friday (after registration) • 30 minutes of year group time on Thursdays • 35 minutes of tutor time every other Tuesday • Meetings arranged with tutor or Head of Year throughout the academic year

  4. Student concerns • Longer lessons than previously • Harder work • Far more prep and longer assignments • Greater focus on independent learning • Greater decision making – University & future

  5. Looking forward to? • Fewer subjects they really want to study • Often smaller class sizes than GCSE • Greater depth to subject content • Independent learning • Study periods (not free periods!) • Toast, tea, coffee … • A new feel to the year group • Having their own study spaces

AS structure • 55 periods in the fortnight (+1 Pastoral/Morning Meeting) • Students will have 12 periods for personal study, meeting with tutor and teachers, music lessons, other school commitments • For A2 if they drop one subject they will have 9 extra study periods over the fortnight • One Activity per week – running one or taking part • Specials – talks and workshops mainly every other week

Wednesday afternoons • Every two weeks College 1 attend Friargate Meeting House • Joined by the Mount School • 25 minute Meeting for Worship – silent with spoken contributions once they feel comfortable • PE every week with activity choices including: • Recreation football, netball, hockey, badminton, fitness, table-tennis, climbing, swimming …

  9. Rewards & Sanctions • Regular praise • Commendations – Head of Year & Headmaster • Monitoring done through tutor each week • Information slips • Tracking Slips - 4 result in a Detention - such as being late, failing to hand work in • Gating – such as missing a lesson, OWL

  10. Leave • Until half term only lunch and after school • After half term, if all work up to date they can request one period in the week to go into town with agreement with their tutor • If they have a study period 5 with no after school commitment, students can sign at reception to go home • Boarders can return to houses with permission from residential staff

  11. UCAS & other applications • Most students will decide to apply through UCAS • Option to apply post-results • Regular meetings with tutor • Advice and talks from University of York and York St. John Admissions Liaison • Oxbridge support • Applying overseas • Art Foundation • Not applying to university

  17. UCAS • Only two terms – UCAS predictions based on AS performance • No January re-sits • Realistic Predictions • Range of offers • Insurance offer vital • Oxbridge/Medics/Vets
