Pathway of Sperm • Sperm is produced in the testicles when a boy reaches puberty. Sperm will continue to be made for the rest of a male’s life. • From the testicles, sperm is stored in the epididymis until it matures. The maturation process takes 3-4 months. • After maturation the sperm moves to the vas deferens until it is release by ejaculation. Sperm mixes with a milky-white fluid to create semen. Semen is a milky-white fluid that nourishes the sperm and helps propel them. • When a male ejaculates his sex organs contract. This pushes the sperm out of the vas deferens, through the prostate gland, where more liquid is added to the semen. • The semen mixture then travels through and out of the urethra.
Fertilization • One sperm fertilize the egg in the fallopian tube • The fertilized egg multiplies into a ball of cells as it travels to the uterus. • The ball of cell implants itself on the uterine wall. • Fertilization + Implantation = Conception
Progression of a Cell • A cell is the basic unit of life. Humans are made of millions of cells. A fertilized egg is just one single cell. • After fertilization the fertilized egg begins to divide and multiply and it turns into an organism made of many cells • The organism develops and the cells become more complex. • Groups of cells make up tissues Tissues then make up organs Organs make up body systems • Cells, tissues, organs, and body systems are different levels of organization in the body system
Basic Development of Baby • Zygote – the fertilized egg is called a zygote • Embryo – the developing baby from implantation until the end of the eighth week of development • Fetus – the developing baby from the end of the eighth week until birth
