Project CONEX (funded by bm:bwk) http://conex.icg.tu-graz.ac.at October 2003 – September 2005 3 Partners • Czech Technical University • University of Ljubljana • Graz University of Technology
Project We have proposed: Collaboration & Networking • Joint workshops • Colloquia • Exchange of students Joint research
Research Robust global appearance methods (CVG/ICG) Robustness for LDA, CCA, etc.
Research 2.Local appearance based methods (CMP/ICG) DR, Salient regions, etc.
Research 3.Support Vector Machines and Kernels (CVG/CMP) Robustness in SVMs and Kernels
Research 4.Combine Statistical and Structural PR methods (all partners) Increasing robustness, Local/Global models, human activity
Research Three application scenarios • Object recognition • Mobile robot navigation • Interpreting human activities in video sequences • Several (> 5) Joint Publications between partners demonstrate cooperative work
Collaboration & Networking Workshops • Computer Vision Winter Workshop (Piran, 2004) • ECCV04 Workshop on Statistical Learning in Computer Vision (Prague) • Computer Vision Winter Workshop (Zell an der Pram, 2005)
Collaboration & Networking Colloquia Prague • 18.9. 2003 • 12.1. 2004 (Cognitive Vision) • 7.4. 2004
Collaboration & Networking Project Meetings • Kick-off Graz 15.11.2003 • 2nd Piran, 4.2. 2004 • Midterm Graz, 10.9. 2004 • Demo Graz • Final Meeting September in Prague
Collaboration & Networking Student Exchange • Several Exchanges (most of them short term < 1 month) between partners • Lot of students (mainly PhD level) involved in Project
European Involvement • Participation in European 5th Framework NoE ECVision • All three partners will participate in new 6th Framework Concerted Action: euCognition • Joint (ViCos, ICG) FET STREP Proposal HIBRID (invited to submit full proposal)
Added Value • A lot of new scientific questions (and some answers) + Students Contacts, Active Participation in Projects • ECCV 2006 will be in Graz (jointly organized with ViCos) • perfect for visibility • new contacts, motivation for students …. • Conference Software from Prague • Methods (MSER) transferd to Austrian Companies (Siemens)
Summary • Project creates considerable added value • Low adminstrative overhead • Complements other activities • Conection between students
Why it was successful? • Partners knew each other for quite some time • Similar research interests • Fit to research of partners • Each partner offers complimentary know-how • Students are open-minded • Students want to work together • Complements EU Projects (needs complimentary expertise) • CONEX is a nice program !!!
