What is a pinhole camera? • Light sealed container with a small hole through which light exposes film • Set aperture • No viewfinder • Self-operated shutter
Most important to consider: • The amount of light available (inside versus outside, weather…) • Film sensitivity • Aperture (pinhole) • Shutter speed (interval)
How It Works • Light travel into container through pinhole, producing an inverted and reversed image on the opposite wall (film) Each point of light coming in creates a point on the film
Negatives • The film that has been exposed becomes the negative • A positive is created through a contact print
Characteristics • Infinite depth of field, which means that all parts of the photo are in focus • Crisp photo quality • Wide angle • Black and white or color
History • The properties of light and photography are old ideas • Chinese philosopher Mo-Ti 400 BCE • Camera Obscura used by the Italians • Johannes Vermeer
Types of Pinhole Cameras • Various sizes, various films http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI9fOWe1KDs&feature=related
Premade cameras • Pinhole Polaroids
Double Exposures • More than one aperture on camera • Expose film more than once
Airplane Hangar Used as Pinhole Camera • Rob Johnson - http://www.legacyphotoproject.com/index2.php • F869, 600 gallons of chemicals
