Basic Facts • The Oregon Trail began in 1836 • It was a way for people to travel to the West • Settlers traveled in covered wagons pulled by oxen
Basic Facts • The Oregon Trail began in St. Louis, Missouri and crossed over 2,000 miles finally ending in Wilamette Valley in Oregon
Basic Facts • The trip took between 4 and 6 months • Many family members walked while the wagons held their belongings
Food • A lot of hunting and gathering was involved along the way in order to survive • They hunted animals like buffalo and deer for food
Food • Before leaving they packed things such as sugar, bacon, coffee, salt, pepper, yeast powder, beans, flour, lard, rice, vinegar, and dried fruit • Since they had no refrigeration they relied a lot on salted meats and other foods they could preserve
Belongings • The travelers only brought the bare necessities with them • Brought candles, matches, some cooking supplies, a tent, tub for bathing, buckets for collecting water, rope, axes, nails, guns, and possibly a few sentimental items
Belongings • They could not bring a lot with them on the long journey • Whatever they would need to survive the journey and would fit in their wagon is what they brought
Disease • The travelers faced many diseases • Typhoid fever • Cholera • Dysentary • Diptheria • Measles
Disease • With these terrible diseases along with starvation and dehydration it is actually quite amazing that anyone survived the journey • Over a 25 year span up to 65,000 deaths occurred
