    1. Virginia Natural Resources VA SOL Science 4.8 The student will investigate and understand important Virginia natural resources. Key Concepts Include: Watershed and Water resources Animals and plants, both domesticated and wild Minerals, rocks, ores, and energy sources Forests, soil, and land

    2. What is a RESOURCE? Resource = Something of supply & support Examples in School Environment Desk, Pencil, Paper, Etc. Other examples of resources?

    3. What is a NATURAL RESOURCE? Natural Resource = Resource that is naturally occurring Examples: Trees, Soils, Water, Wildlife, Caves Other Examples? What makes a man-made resource different from a natural resource?

    4. Man-Made Resources vs. Natural Resources Purchase man-made resources at the store. You cant grow Fruit Loops in your garden You can go to the store if you run out of pencils, desks, clothes There is NO store to purchase soil, water, air, plants, and wildlife once they are extinct. You cant make trees in a factory

    5. Life Box Activity Pass the box around. Take Note of what is inside. What resources were in the box?

    8. Forest Characteristics Forests are made up of trees. What are the different parts of a Tree? Trunk Roots Leaves Branches

    9. TREES Provide oxygen for us to breathe Hold the soil in place Make climate cooler Provide shelter and food for wildlife Why are forests important?

    11. Tree Activity Draw a cross-section of a tree with the same number of rings as your age. Next to your cross section draw a tree, using the leaf card draw the leaves of the tree.
