With GIS, students should: • take an active role • work with an authentic problem • analyze how one factor relates to other conditions of a given place • apply similar features in other places • synthesize their findings • evaluate or predict a problem
With GIS, teachers should: • ask to add new data • give an authentic problem • ask “what if” • give a scenario • have students interpret the mapping information they displayed • provide an assessment tool for their project
Critical questions to carry a GIS project • What should be answered (determined)? • What types of data must be collected? • How are the data collected? • How are the data visualized? • How are the data used to make decisions?
Your task: a GIS lesson plan • As a group, develop a GIS lesson plan related with your subject matters • Plan to develop a series of maps • Scratch a series of maps on the file I gave to you • Let’s talk about your lesson plan and its instructional values
Limitations • Not easy to learn the GIS software • Budget for the hardware and software • Curriculum integration: teachers’ collaboration
