Course Description: This course is intended to help you get a deeper understanding of government (Canadian government in particular) and how you can take an active role in shaping our society.This course is part knowledge and learning, part interactive and application. Take note that this is a 9 week course and will move quickly. Do not miss classes and do not miss assignments.
Units of Study: • Unit 1:The Good Citizen –This provides an overview of Canadian government and what it means to be a citizen of a nation. Concepts such as democratic processes, civic participation and inquiry skills will be addressed. • Unit 2: The Informed Citizen –This unit will examine the structures of Canadian government (such as levels and branches), the processes that are involved in making laws and how elections are conducted. • Unit 3:The Active Citizen –This unit will prepare students to take an active part in public decision-making. This unit will make connections between the theoretical and practical aspects of the course. • Unit 4: The Global Citizen –This unit will introduce students to historic and contemporary global issues. This will give students an opportunity to evaluate their own and other’s positions on current issues.
Grading: Assignments = 25% About 2/month Quizzes = 0% Weekly Unit Projects/Tests = 45% 4 in total Exam = 30%
Course Description: This course will examine the work-place and your future role within the world of work. Students will examine possibilities for their futures in the work-place, along with developing an understanding of what they want for themselves in their working lives. This course is part introspective and part research. Students will engage in learning about themselves and developing interpersonal skills. Students will also research and learn about the world of work and the rules governing it. Take note that this is a 9 week course and will move quickly. Do not miss classes and do not miss assignments.
Units of Study: • Unit 1:The World of Work –This unit covers a wide range of topics which are designed to set the stage for the course. Students will examine the components of adult, working life, including economic and social trends, concepts of success, and personal interests which will inform their career paths. • Unit 2: All About Me –This unit will engage and empower students by helping them to become aware of themselves, their wants and goals for their future adult lives. Students will build and develop a profile which will help them to identify key skills and traits in preparation for crafting a resume and portfolio. • Unit 3:My Future –In this unit students will combine their learning with research into the career-fields of their choice. Students will develop a portfolio, resume and education plan, describing what they will need to learn and do in order to reach their goals for a rewarding career.
Grading: Assignments = 35% About 2-3/month Quizzes = 0% Weekly Unit Projects/Tests = 35% 3 in total Portfolio/Exam = 30%
Levels of Achievement: Level 1 (50-59%): • Demonstrates limited thinking, application, communication or knowledge/understanding. Level 2 (60-69%): DO NOT approach me and ask/demand for more marks or extra assignments. You are given an opportunity to get the grade you want each time you have an assignment. • Demonstrates some thinking, application, communication or knowledge/understanding. Level 3 (70-79%): • Demonstrates considerable thinking, application, communication or knowledge/understanding. Level 4 (80-100%): • Demonstrates thorough thinking, application, communication or knowledge/understanding.
Late Assignments Policy: Late assignments will have 5% deducted off their final grade for each day (including weekends) it is late, up to a total of 30%. When an assignment is six days late, it will only be accepted with a prior agreement with myself. This agreement may include an assignment to makeup for the lateness of the original assignment and will be dealt with on a case by case basis. Assignments WILL NOT be accepted later than 1 week prior to exams. It is extremely important that students take responsibility for their actions and take the initiative for any late assignments or any foreseen lateness, by discussing the matter with me as soon as possible.
Academic Honesty: Plagiarism is the practice of copying the work of others and submitting it as your own and will not be tolerated in this class. Plagiarism can include, copying homework/classwork/tests and essays of other students in the class, or copying other sources in your work without referencing them. An example of this would be copying a quote from an essay/video/website or any other source and not making proper notation of where this came from or who said it. Without references, you are taking credit for someone else’s work. Any student found to be plagiarizing will receive zero on their assignment and after a meeting with me, may be given an opportunity to write a make-up assignment.
