The Service • Archbold Northside Hospital is a mental health facility providing the latest in psychological services and treatment • The facility “is dedicated to the treatment of . . . emotional, mental and behavioral problems.” http://www.archbold.org/ArchboldServices/northsideadolescemotbehavioralsercives.htm
The Grant • Enhancing Practice Improvement in Community-Based Care for Prevention and Treatment of Drug Abuse or Co-occurring Drug Abuse and Mental Disorders – offered by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH), and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-06-001.html
Matching Services with Grant • Northside combines a wide array of treatments for its patients, varying from the traditional services of pharmacology and group therapy to the expanded services of in-house behavior modification along with a comprehensive aftercare program upon discharge • This grant seeks to bridge the gap between mental health research in an academic setting with application in a real world setting
Grant Requirements • Eligible applicants include those with a 501(c)(3) federal tax status • Providers must have the capacity to initiate and sustain “a complex multidirectional process of continuous practice improvement that involves the interaction of multiple individual- and systems-level factors” http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-06-001.html
Grant Requirements (cont.) • Applicants who do not currently have the programs and resources available to carry out such programs must be able to partner with agencies in the community to increase the service level to this minimum threshold
Program Offerings • Archbold is categorized as an IRS 501(c)(3) entity • Northside Hospital “is staffed by an interdisciplinary treatment team consisting of board-certified psychiatrists, licensed psychologists, social workers, therapists, certified assistants, dietitians, pharmacists and activity therapists” able to implement and monitor new programs at all levels of mental health care http://www.archbold.org/ArchboldServices/northsideadolescemotbehavioralsercives.htm
Expanding the Program • Archbold Northside is housed in the same community with Southwestern State Hospital, a state mental health facility • Northside can join with Southwestern in a collaborative effort to increase the level of program involvement and groups involved
Expanding the Program (cont.) • In an effort to provide a direct link between academics and application, Northside will join efforts with the clinical psychology program at Valdosta State University, providing real world experience to the students and the latest in clinical practices to the hospital http://chiron.valdosta.edu/dtwasieleski/msprog.htm
Program Objectives • This program will provide a necessary link between the critical advancements in ideas and concepts found in the classroom setting with the experience and knowledge of day-to-day applications found only in a clinical environment • The goal is to streamline the development of new techniques in the field of clinical psychology by reducing the lag time between development and application
Application Process • Grant application materials and instructions are available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/ funding/phs398/phs398.html • Applicants must be able to formulate research questions and ideas that relate to “(a) substance abuse and related problems or (b) co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders” http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-06-001.html
