French Fry Fuel Team Members L-R: John Neal, Marie Stark, Shane Bird, Kate Burlingame, Chuck Weatherspoon, Advisor Dr. Tom Hess Conditioning Used Frying Oil For Conversion to Biodiesel Background • The J.R. Simplot Company generates 2 million pounds of oil each year. Simplot would like to condition the oil and convert it to biodiesel, which would then be returned to Simplot to offset the diesel used in the transportation fleet. The waste oil generated in the frying production lines forms two waste streams. Our team has determined that one of these streams is already suitable for conversion to biodiesel. The secondary waste stream, DAF (Dissolved Air Floatation) oil, is being wasted to cattle feed. Our goal is to target a subset oil of DAF, the WESP (Wet-Electrostatic Precipitator Oil), and determine a treatment plan for the conditioning of the oil and convert it to the proper specs for the production of biodiesel. Problem Statement • In order to condition the oil, the team will design a system to remove free fatty acids, water, particulates, and other carbon impurities from the used oil to a specification defined by the biodiesel manufacturer. • <4% FFA • <.1% Water by weight • <50-100 micron particulate size Recommended Design Solution WESP Water - Oil T = 140°F 2 - 7500 Gallon Settling Tanks (304 Stainless Steel) Heat Tracing T = 140°F Capital Investment Testing Bag Filter Accomplishments 3.32 gpm Centrifuge (316 Stainless Steel) 3500 Gallon Oil Storage Tank (304 Stainless Steel) Heat Tracing T = 140°F Team French Fry Fuel has performed numerous tests on Simplot oils: •Determined mainstream oil is suitable for conversion to biodiesel (Fall, 2007) •Simplot has now produced a batch of biodiesel from mainstream railcar of oil (Winter, 2008) •Decided MOP oil is unsuitable for the production of biodiesel •Successful in a design concept for upscale analysis for WESP oil (Spring, 2008) 3.32 gpm Rotary Positive Displacement Pump Oil Shipping 3.32 gpm Rotary Positive Displacement Pump Waste Water Stream Design Challenges Acknowledgments •Determining exact discharge of oil from WESP System •Effective cost analysis •Effective full up-scale analysis •Effective oil parameters for processing (temperature, flow, hydraulic head, viscosity, concentration of particles) Thanks to Simplot, Don Sturtevant, Paul Mann, Dr. Tom Hess, Dr. Van Gerpen, and Joe Thompson for their assistance with this project.
