King Fahd Universityof Petroleum & MineralsCCSE College Infrastructure Committee(2004 – 2005)
Team Members • Chairman: • Dr. Marwan Abu-Amara (COE) • Members: • Dr. H. E. Shabaik (SE) • Dr. M. F. Khan (COE) • Mr. Muhammad Wasiq (ICS) • Mr. Shaik Arifusalam (SE) • Mr. S. M. Shamsul Islam (COE) KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Objective • Implement strategies and action plans to improve college infrastructure • includes network, common resources, etc. • Assist college in achieving the objective set in the Strategic Plan regarding college infrastructure • “Continuously build and modernize college infrastructure including computing facilities, laboratories” KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Committee Specific Tasks • Benchmark with known schools facilities • Assess availability of network access to faculty and students • Review lab status on yearly basis • Modernize and update class rooms KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Achievements • Benchmark with known schools facilities • # of workstations to student ratio is 0.4 • # of technical staff to workstation ratio is 0.016 • 1 technical staff per 64 workstations • Industry recommended level of support for schools is 1 technical staff per 40 computers KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Achievements (Contd.) • Assess availability of network access to faculty and students • Avg. number of logins per day per computer = 10 • Avg. session time per login = 70 minutes • Thus, avg. utilization per day per computer = 700 minutes (i.e. 11.66 hours ½ day) • PC labs usage is extremely high !!! KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Achievements (Contd.) • Review lab status on yearly basis • Notes: • One ICS lab is used both as a student lab and as a research lab • 10% or more software/hardware upgrade is considered a “software”/“hardware” upgrade • Some of the labs are in the process of being upgraded KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Achievements (Contd.) • Modernize and update class rooms • Survey about buildings 22, 23, and 24 classrooms adequacy for teaching was developed and distributed to CCSE faculty • 14 different responses/observations were provided • The temperature is too cold/hot • Ventilation is not adequate • No sound proof • Equip. layout in classrooms and some labs is not suitable • Immediate help when facing problems with classroom PC and projector is lacking • … KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Suggestions & Ideas for Improvements • Workstations to student ratio, # of technical staff to workstation ratio, and availability of network access to faculty and students • Add 2 new PC labs with around 30 PCs each • Requires additional space !!! • Provision more wireless access points • Assumes that large number of students have laptops • Relieves the immediate need for additional PC labs • Increase the popularity of Unix among students • CCSE Unix lab is mostly under-loaded • Hire more technical staff & provide 24 hour technical support KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Suggestions & Ideas for Improvements • Lab status • Address the labs that need immediate upgrade • More space is needed if new labs is to be added • Introduce new KPIs related to the labs • Measure the number of courses per lab usage • Modernize and update class rooms • Joint committee needs to study and address the issues observed in the survey conducted • Representatives from CCSE, ITC, deanship of academic affairs, and registrar KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
Conclusion • High utilization of workstations by students • Understaffed with respect to technical staff administering workstations • Some labs need immediate upgrade • Major issues regarding classroom/labs adequacy for teaching • Additional space is a major concern that has a direct impact on improving the college infrastructure KFUPM - CCSE Proprietary
