Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
The Audience • When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. He opened His mouth and began to teach them… • Matt 5:1-2 (NASB) • When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; • Matt 7:28 (NASB) Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
Flow • Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. • Matt 5:16 (NASB) Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
Flow • Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. • Matt 5:17 (NASB) For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matt 5:20 (NASB) Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
Flow • Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect • Matt 5:48 (NASB) Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
Flow • In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. • Matt 7:12 (NASB) Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
Flow • Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell-and great was its fall. • Matt 7:24-27 (NASB) Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
Purpose • To challenge the disciples that being a citizen of God's kingdom (a follower of Christ) is marked by an internal transformation that bears itself out in radical obedience. Message From the Hilltop: The Big Picture (Matthew 5, 6, & 7)
