  2. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS • Poles are very tied to the land • More than 2/3’s of Poland is open land • The land is fertile and summers are rainy • Valuable minerals such as coal, sulfur and copper can be found in the Mountains

  3. WORLD WAR II • 95% of population is Catholic • Poland was multiethnic before WWII • Now only 9,000 Jew remain in Poland because of the Holocaust

  4. Holocaust • There were over 3 million Jews in Poland before WWII • Jewish Ghettos were sealed off by the Nazis • The Jews revolted and were killed and the ghettos were burned

  5. SOVIET OCCUPATION • After WWII Poland was taken over by the Soviet Union (communism) • Millions fled Poland • Communism was eventually defeated

  6. Catholic Church • Communism tried to stamp out religion • The Catholic Church stayed strong and was important in the life of the people • A compromise was eventually met

  7. Solidarity • Independent Polish workers union that led the fight against communism • Lech Walesa was the leader • Outlawed in 1981 but kept fighting for free elections, 1989 success came
