How to Use Datastream with Excel Program Charles Wu Research Librarian for Accounting & Finance Charles.wu@utsa.edu 1/22/2014
Where are Datastream Workstations • at UTSA John Peace Library - Two computer workstations (with label number JPL-014 and 015) • at The Financial Studies Center at the College of Business
Why use Datastream • Coverage of Datastream • In a nutshell, financial instruments, economic data, company financial data… • Details on Its Coverage • See a Research Guide for Datastream -http://libguides.utsa.edu/Datastream • The Most effective way to find data from Datastream • Using Excel with Datastream Advance • Not from Datasteam alone
Interface - 4 Panes / Windows 3. Find Series and Datatype 1. Data Category 4. Output 2. Request type
Data Category • Is the data I need available in Datasteam, and in which category? • click Data Categories in Navigator • Data / content is organized by Category • What do I type into the “Enter series” box? • Find Series /Datastream Navigator • Data Category is so broad, use “Find Series” to get a specific one in that category • Click the Button “Find Series” --> to open the Window Datastream Navigator
button >Navigator window Find Series • Why use Find Series / Navigator • You don’t know the code for a financial instrument: • @msft is for Microsoft Corp. • U:wmt = Wal-Mart Stores • Two search ways within Datastream Navigator window • Explore: From general to specific • Commodities » Energy » Crude Oil • Criteria Search = Advanced keyword search • Crude Oil > NBR0414
Category – Future; Keyword - Crude Oil Market – United States
A list of company names in a sector (General Retailers) in a country (Mexico)
Datatype Datatype • Each data category has variousdatatypes • e.g. : Price – Opening for Equities • E.g.: Adjusted Price for Equities (also a default datatype) • Datatypes vary from category to category • Whether this datatype is available depending on the data (datatypeties tothe nature of data) • Available datatypes in Datasteam • See page “Datastream Datatypes” on Research Guide • A pdf file - Datastream_dataypes • All Datatypes in an excel file • Definition of datatype – click on “open book” icon
now in Equities- Datatype> “Starts with” search: Earnings per share basic – fourth quarter 05214
Create a template file • Create a template once, save for future use • Can easily re-use / modify this file later • Don’t reinvent the wheel • Here is a sample file - DataStream Template for UTSA students
Use DS in Excel’s New Request Table • Update • Request Type • Format • Series Lookup • Datatype / Expression / Search Lookup • 6. Start Date • 7. End Date • 8. Freq • 9. Data Destination
Expressions / Functions Format You can use "Function Picker / Builder" in Excel program to create or select an expression. Below is an example of an expression: • pch#(X,1M), where pch# = percentage change X = either a series or a list of series 1M = 1 month (price) so, pch#(X,1M) will return the percentage change for a series X • Functions Format - All functions share a common format: Function#(Expression,Parameter)
