  4. Using –ED and –ING Adjectives to Describe Feelings. P.121 Adjectives ending in -ed Adjectives ending in -ing Often describe the person, animal or thing that creates the feeling. Eva heard some surprising news. • Often describe the person, animal or thing that has feeling. • Eva was surprised by the news. May was shocked when she heard the terrifying news.   5. Using Gerund Subjects. 127 What is a Gerund? Spelling & punctuations Follow the –ing spelling rule (In grammar). No commas after the gerund phrase. To make it negative add not in the beginning. • A gerund is the –ing form of a verb used as a noun. • Gerunds or gerund phrases are sometimes subjects of sentences. • Note: They can be used as objects. Infinitives should be paired with infinitives and gerunds should be paired with gerunds. • To +verb in infinitive form. • It can come as a subject or after a verb. • To learn a second language is difficult. • I hope to see you soon.   7. Using would and Used To to talk about the past. P129 When to use them? Would & used to Used to: for action and nonaction verbs. Would: for action verbs only. • To express past habits or routines. Not used for things that happened once or twice. She used to think that he was the oldest man in the world. When she was young, she would get up early every morning. Reminder: Non-action verbs indicate state, sense, desire, possession, or opinion. They can’t be used in the progressive tenses. Because I was unhappy, I wanted to go home. Independent clause + dependent clause.
