Purpose of Elementary World Languages Technology Study GroupCollaborate, Communicate. Motivate! NJ Department of Education recommends a minimum of 75 minutes of elementary school language study weekly. As elementary language teachers we are interested in extending our students opportunities to practice and learn Spanish via web-based learning. We explored innovative technologies that would enable us to create online activities for our students. We were interested in learning how to create audio and video activities that would enable our students to practice their pronunciation and lessons when the elementary language teacher was not present. These activities could be practiced as part of a classroom center, computer lab time, or at home with their parents, guardians, or other interested family members or care providers. Topics of study included collaborative lesson planning, the use of a USB audio recorder to import student or teacher models, creation of video (using software such as iMovie or Movie Maker) and investigation of podcasting to be used as an education tool. We explored how to create audio using GarageBand. The purpose of these activities was to extend our students’ learning outside of their scheduled Spanish time. Monies budgeted ($500.00) were expended to buy digital MP3 recorders/voice recorders and video recorders.

Outcomes • Students have been engaged in using the activities outside of class for homework and to practice pronunciation during computer and class center time, when time is available. On indoor lunch days, some teachers have allowed students to use the computers in class to practice their Spanish with the Elementary Spanish Class Pages and QUIA activities. As part of the Dodge Grant Action Research Project, data was collected showing that students increase their use of the activities as they become more familiar with how to access the activities. Parents who viewed their student’s presentation at the HSA Multicultural events were very impressed with their language production. The online Class Pages and activities enable parents to see what their children are learning. • The language teachers are becoming more proficient in integrating technology. We realize that as much as we have learned, there is so much more to know.
