Perspective on the purpose of public libraries / the core functions in the future • The library as a warehouse of knowledge and information • The library as a centre for development and education • The library as a source of inspiration for reading and literature • The library as an encyclopedia of art and culture • The library as a podium for meeting and debate
2014: Focus on national projects Focus on sharing knowledge and communication Developing projects for libraries, to inform, learn and read: National projects like ‘Boekstart’ and ‘de Bibliotheek op School’ Focus on digital infrastructure by BNL: - Website as a Service, National Catalogue of Libraries, Datawarehouse, E-bookplatform
2015: integration The Netherlands Institute for Public Libraries (SIOB) and Bibliotheek.nl (BNL) will be a part of the Royal Library/Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), according to a new law, starting in 2015. New tasks will be: • E-content: on behalf of the Dutch State, the KB will buy content for the national digital library. • Collection: to make a plan for the arrangement of the digital collection. • Contextualise: combine and add digital content to the digital library.
