The Mississippi Digital LibrarySoutheast CONTENTdm Users Group MeetingJuly 31, 2008 Laura Capell & Diane DeCesare RossUniversity of Southern Mississippi Libraries
First, some background…. • November 1999 –Digital program established at USM • January 2000 – Began digitizing oral histories dealing with civil rights • May 2000 – Implemented SIRSI Hyperion Digital Archive as the project database • August 2001 – Hired Digitization Librarian
USM’s First Major Digitization Project:The Civil Rights in Mississippi Digital Archivefunded by IMLS National Leadership Grant for Libraries • Oral histories • Organizational records • Letters • Photographs • Diaries
Access • Hyperion Digital Media Archive • Hierarchical search • Attribute search (searches metadata only) • Content search (searches full-text) • Growing pains • Bending the database to our will
The Idea for the Mississippi Digital Library • Create an infrastructure for a lasting statewide digital archive of primary source materials held in Mississippi’s repositories • Support varying levels of commitment to allow broad participation • Create a foundation for expansion to include a variety of formats, subject areas, and institutional types. • Meet national standards while keeping economic sustainability as a focus • Base partnership on shared oversight and decision-making
The beginning … • December 2003 • Funding agency: Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) • National Leadership Grant for Libraries • $463,322
Pilot project partners • Delta State University • Jackson State University • Mississippi Department of Archives and History • Tougaloo College • University of Mississippi • University of Southern Mississippi
Why have a statewide digital archive? • Promotes Mississippi and Mississippi resources • Brings Mississippi to those who are unable to come here • Encourages more researchers to come to Mississippi • Working together allows us to do more with limited resources. • Preservation: • Decreases handling of physical materials. • Preserves content in case physical materials are lost to disaster.
Potential for the future • Expansion to include various subject areas • Expansion to include public libraries, museums, and other cultural institutions • Inclusion in a larger Cultural Resource Network
CONTENTdm at USM • Migrating legacy data • Moving forward • USM collections vs. the Mississippi Digital Library
Mississippi Digital Library and USM Digital Collections are two separate sites running on a single CONTENTdm license • Use scripted method and duplication method to separate the sites • MDL runs in /cdm4 • USM Digital Collections runs in /cdm_usm • Would like to remove MDL Collections from list of collections in the Advanced Search for the USM Digital Collections
