CCR TASK 1- How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
‘We Can Fall in Love Later’ -Set in 1969 Penelope (aka Pen) is a 17 year old girl. She falls in love with a distant admirer, Ash. A 19 year old boy that has been watching Pen from her Psyche ward window. Ash persuades Pen in his letters to run away from home as soon as she gets back from ‘treatment’. At first the young couple’s love is fueled by innocence, exploration and an escape from society. For the first time Pen feels ‘wanted’ and she is swept away by his written charm. Ash preys on Pen’s vulnerability and instability as she is kept in her Ward room and delt tranquilizers to ‘treat’ her problematic behaviour. However, it is reveled that Ash’s true intentions are to manipulate and deceive Pen to commit an horrific crime. REPRESENTATION- Mental illness, Gender, class and sexuality. UNCONVENTIONAL- counter typical portrayal. 2

Psychological Thriller 3 MAJOR ELEMENTS q Major Plot Twists- Psychological thrillers can be ruined by spoilers, since so much of their excitement hinges on the unexpected twists and turns that the novel takes. q Familiar Elements- Psychological thrillers often take place in the home (aka domestic thriller) and feature ordinary- seeming characters. This allows thriller writers to get inside the reader’s mind making them wonder ‘What if this happened to me?’ q Unreliable narrator- incorporating an unreliable narrator is a way authors create suspense as the reader tries to figure out who they can trust. 4 4
MOONRISE KINGDOM Moonrise Kingdom is a 2012 American coming-of-age film directed by Wes Anderson. 5
Characters- How are they similar? Sam Shakusky Ash Ash is a 19 year old boy that has lived in and out fosters homes and at times finding temporary lodgings. His background has injected a distorted view of relationships and trust. Despite being conventionally attractive, smooth and charming at a glance, Ash’s aims are to manipulate and seek revenge on the traumatic upbringing he’s been through. Sam is an orphan with repressed emotional wounds that can become easily peeled open with tense temperamental treatment from his friends. Shakusky's biological family is no longer around and his foster home is closing the doors on him, his fellow campers ignore his existence. 6
Characters- How are they similar? Suzy Bishop Penelope (aka Pen) Suzy Bishop is the lead female character in Moonrise Kingdom. She is the eldest sibling of three younger brothers. She feels isolated at twelve years old and she feels she can’t communicate with her parents anymore. Posted on the parents fridge is ‘Coping with a very troubled child.’ Pen is the protagonist of our Opening Sequence. She is head strong blunt, witty and carefree. She has grown up somewhat comfortably from a middle class family in the 60s. However, stemming from her problematic relationship with her parents and her anti-society attitude Pen is mentally unstable and her parents admit her to a psyche ward where Ash finds her. COUNTER TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF FEMALE TEENAGERS IN THE LATE 60S, GOES AGAINST EXPECTATIONS OF ‘YOUNG LADIES’ 7
1.Camera Work and Editing
Camera Movement ‘We Can Fall..’ ‘Moonrise..’ Whip Pan- achieved using a fluid head directed by the camera operator. In this case the cinematoghrapher Robert Yeoman. Vertical tilt- achieved by loosened tripod and camera operator smoothly following the action in time with the accompaniment.
Lighting Stereotypical warm and nostalgic glow of the coming-of-age genre and the 1960s.
DIEGETIC SOUND NON-DIEGETIC SOUND VOICE OVER
The End of the F***ing World ‘The End of the F***ing World’ is a British dark comedy-drama television programme set in 2010, based on the award winning series of books by Charles Forsman. 16
Characters- How are they similar? Alyssa Pen Alyssa and pen are similar in their love for adventure and their carefree personality. They are both different in their own ways and therefore, isolated from society and their home life. However, in addition to their age gap, I think Alyssa has a stronger, more vicious personality than Pen. Pen has more naïve and innocent personality traits that can be easily exploited. In that regard, Alyssa can be seen more similar to Ash. COUNTER TYPICAL PORTRAYAL Alyssa Foley is one of the protagonists in ‘The End of the F***ing World’ and stands for a strong and independent female character. She has a taste for adventure and is essentially bored in her life. 17
Characters- How are they similar? James Ash In the development of our product, we created Ash as an awkward and introverted character. He was socially challenged and physically looked uncoordinated and weak. However, as we developed the story line we wanted to create a character that could easily charm and manipulate Pen. I think James is more similar to the first version of Ash, but some similarities can be drawn to the second. For example, they both have similar intention in their relationships with Pen and Alyssa. I think the crutial difference between the two is that James love for Alyssa overcomes his psychopathic and murderous thoughts. Alex Lawther as James believes he is a psychopath and has a disturbing love interest for Alyssa At first, James thinks he wants to kill a human and chooses Alyssa as his first target. However, he ends up falling in love with her over the course of the first season. 18
Lighting ‘The End of the F***ing World’ Clear difference of lighting in the present scenes- richer colours, vibrant, natural lighting. Compared to the flashback scenes, ‘unhappy childhood’ communicated through muted colour scheme – brown, green, grey. Earthy tones. Symbolic of Dark-Comedy drama genre. We Can Fall in Love Later Similar to the series, my product uses a colour scheme and lighting to communicate time frame (1969) and symbolic of coming-of-age genre of film. 23
