Data collection • Target group is citizens aged 16years or older • Data collection in 2008 & 2009 made by telephone • Change of data collection method to web panel in 2013 • Data collection period – May to December 2013
Hypothesis we wanted to test • Do new info channels like mobile phones and apps, reduce the usage of other info channels (like printed info?) timetables? • Do elderly use mobile phones and apps less than younger people? • Have people over 80 years learned how to use internet to find PT info? NB! Method changed from telephone to a internet based study (web panel).
Questions asked regarding PT info channels IF RESPONDENT USES PUBLIC TRANSPORT How often do you normally obtain information you need to go by public transport by…..
Using timetables or other printed informationYoung people use less printed info * Average for Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo & Stockholm
Steep increase in use of internet in the group 80+(probably an effect of the change in data collection method -> from telephone to web) * Average for Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo & Stockholm
Using smart phone apps – depends on age (Numbers for 2013 only) * Average for Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo & Stockholm
New info channels do not seem to reduce the use of existing ones (except for printed info) * Average for Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo & Stockholm
Use of PT Info channels: Preliminary summary Hypothesis 1: New channels reduce the use of existing: • Use of printed info is decreasing – but overall usage is going up • New channels seems to come in addition to existing ones, not replacing them Hypothesis 2: Elderly use apps & mobile phones less the younger people: • Yes, they do. And the increase in usage of mobile internet / SMS is not significant (even though the 2013 survey is conducted by web) Hypothesis 3: Have people 80 + learned how to use internet to find info? • Well, in the web panel survey it seems so. But web panel participants aged 80 + might be quite different from others
