UH Health Science Center: UH System Strategic Principles • Strategic Principle 1: Institutional Excellence • The UH System universities will continue to strive for excellence in all undergraduate, graduate and professional programs, as well as in research and public service. • Initiative 2: • Create a University of Houston Health Science Center and UH System MITC at the Texas Medical Center.

UH Health Science Center: Overarching Objective The University of Houston will become the university of the Texas Medical Center: • Full range of academic programs that serve the needs of TMC organizations and their employees • Research and training programs that capitalize on the strengths of UH and all TMC institutions • Expanded patient services for UH clinical programs

UH Health Science Center: Opportunities • Increased Collaboration: • Between the University of Houston and Texas Medical Center institutions • Among faculty from different colleges and departments at the University of Houston, as well as its sister UHS institutions • Benefits of Increased Collaboration: • Development of new, innovative multidisciplinary academic and research programs • Increased external research funding • Interdisciplinary education, research and patient care

UH Health Science Center: Opportunities • Expanded Client/Patient Base and Student Opportunities: • New patient markets for UH clinical programs • Increased opportunities for student internships and field-based experience at TMC institutions • New student markets for UH undergraduate, graduate and professional programs

UH Health Science Center: Challenges Funding: What funding streams exist or can be established for the new health science center so that it is a benefit to (rather than a financial drain on) the remainder of the university? • Formula funding – health sciences designation • Special item support • Fees for service • Grants, contracts and indirect cost recovery • Tier-one excellence funds • Philanthropy

  7. UH Health Science Center: Challenges Administration and Leadership: Can an infrastructure be organized to develop and then coordinate relationships between UH health-related faculty and programs with the needs and ongoing activities in the Texas Medical Center?

UH Health Science Center: Administration & Leadership • Role of Health Science Center Administration: • Provide a focus for the health care disciplines, programs, research interests and patient care interests • Provide leadership, liaison and coordination of programs and services to the Texas Medical Center and its constituent members • Provide a structure for the development of interdisciplinary initiatives, programs, disciplines and professions that have health-related dimensions

UH Health Science Center: Progress to Date • Inventory of academic and research programs • Creation of Health Sciences Task Force • Initial MOU with Methodist Hospital System regarding institutional affiliation • Discussions with City of Houston regarding transfer to UH of the City Public Health Building in the TMC • Submission of tuition revenue bond and special item requests to the Texas Legislature
