  2. Definition of The Manhattan Project • Manhattan Project-(man′hat·ən ′prä′jekt) (engineering) A United States project lasting from August 1942 to August 1946, which developed the atomic energy program, with special reference to the atomic bomb.

  3. A Little About J. Robert Oppenheimer… • In October 1942 J. Robert Oppenheimer was appointed as director of research for what was to be called the Manhattan Project. • He would become known as the father of the atom bomb • He was a theoretical physicist • He was a brilliant scientist, but he had never run a large laboratory before

  4. What was Oppenheimer’s Role in WWII? • He was the US theoretical physicist and director of the Los Alamos laboratory. • His role was to instruct workers on building the Atomic Bomb so basically he was the father of the A-bomb.

  5. How Did The Individual Impact WWII? • He was in charge of the science for the Manhattan Project so basically he made the atomic bomb possible. • He handled a role most scientists wouldn’t have gone for. Wartime nuclear work was "sort of like falling in love,“ says a worker in the Manhattan Project
