What have our grade 3 mathematicians been working on? • Added and subtracted numbers within 1,000 • Used place value strategies and number lines to represent addition and subtraction solutions • Developed the concept of multiplication and related it to skip counting and repeated addition; practiced basic multiplication combinations, beginning with 2's, 5's, and 10's • Represented and analyzed data on bar graphs and pictographs

7. What will our grade 3 mathematicians do next? • Explore and reason about area and perimeter using standard units (feet and inches) & metric units (centimeters and meters) • Identify and reason about attributes of shapes • Develop and understand the meaning of fractions and fraction notation; use representations of fractions to solve problems • Learn multiplication combinations up to 9 x 9; develop strategies for solving multiplication and division • Solve addition and subtraction problems with 3 digit numbers, working with numbers larger than 1,000

How can families help at home? • Fact practice at home • See CPM website - Academics link for websites and Fastt Math link • Promote participation   • Extreme-Home Math - Students should record the math task they work on in their planner • Idita-Math Problem of the Week - Problem will be sent home in Friday folders, beginning today • Homework • Math Investigations hardcover handbook  - still available to check out if you need one! • Communicate difficulties to classroom teacher

9. What have our grade 3 readers been working on? • Unit 1: Launching the Reading Workshop • express ideas clearly during discussions • build on the ideas of others during discussions • support their thinking with evidence from the text • Unit 2: Understanding Narrative Structure • determine the elements of narratives including characters, setting, problem, turning point, solution, plot and author’s message • determine author’s message or lesson in a text • use narrative elements to recount stories orally

10. What have our grade 3 readers been working on? • Unit 3: Navigating Nonfiction Text Features • identify text features (conventions) and use them to gather information and to determine what matters most • ask questions before, during, and after reading to gather and clarify information • begin to take notes to record big ideas and supporting evidence • notice new vocabulary and apply a variety of strategies for making meaning • use visual features to gain a deeper understanding of the text • gather and share information learned while reading

11. What have our grade 3 readers been working on? • Unit 4: Unlocking & Exploring Traditional Literature • recognize the common characteristics of traditional literature • explore connections between folktales and cultures read closely to determine the relationship between central message, or lesson, and key details in a text • compare/contrast traditional literature stories w/similar lessons • ask/answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a traditional text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for answers • take and utilize notes to become effective oral storytellers • practice the skills of fluent and effective oral storytelling

12. What will our grade 3 readers do next? • Unit 5: Biography • Unit 6: Uncovering the Language and Messages in Poetry • Unit 7: Researching Across Texts: Content Area Study (Science) • Unit 8: Reflection and Assessment: How I’ve Grown as a Reader
