Implementing e-learning in an acute hospital trust:meeting core business needs Jane Hadfield and Caroline Plaice
Objectives • Define what we mean by e-learning and classroom learning • Describe the managed learning environment • Demonstrate key projects to meet Trust objectives • Take a candid look at challenges to implementation
What is e-learning ? ‘the facilitation of learning through the use of electronic technology’ (Cumbria and Lancashire Strategic Health Authority, 2003) Can be - • Electronic learning • Web based learning • Computer based learning • Online learning • Distance learning • Technology based learning
Tried and tested - • Pitman's Shorthand Correspondence – 1889. • Printed course posted to learners with assignments back to the Tutor in London.
Quality of learning - Studies have shown: Learning can be 25 to 40% higher • Learning time reduced by an average of 40 to 60%
Blended Learning “…represents an opportunity to integrate the innovative and technological advances offered by online with the interaction and participation offered in the best of traditional learning” Thorn, K 2003. Blended Learning
Our ‘Blended’ approach -What are we talking about? Some or all of these – • Pre requisite study • Classroom attendance • Coaching and mentoring • Learning by doing • E learning All recorded and managed through the MLE
Project Team • Executive Level support • Project Sponsor • Partnership working
What we offer is acontinuum from…Links to packagesFace to face courses with online documentationProfessional foraMCQsInteractive assessments‘In house’ developed materials
‘Relentlessly improve patient experience and safety’ NBT Top objective
Aim • To relentlessly improve patient experience and safety relating to infection control by the provision and embedding of blended learning
Objectives include… • All infection control link practitioners to have completed the CLU Infection Control E Learning package by end of March 2008 • Identifying appropriate learning programmes to complement and extend the CLU and BMJ Learning clostridium difficile packages • Initiate improvement cycles and action learning sets by facilitating group discussion in identifying practice development to reduce health care associated infections
Appraisal & Development Review • Courses can be pushed out through line managers • Electronic management of portfolio and individuals record
Developing e-learning for ICE - Order Communications • Testing the e authoring tools Implementing NCRS • 10 000 people will need training…. • Integrating booking, training and assessment process
Challenges to implementation • Data quality • Existence of key fields – but in different databases • Key fields – but not automated • Changing processes at the point of induction • Infrastructure • New skills set required • Project support • Content timescales
The Future • Short Term Goals • Role out of e content • NVQ 3 Direct Training and Support course structure drafted • Self Service within the MLE • Opening the system out to students on placement • Development of skills in designing e-learning
MEDIUM – LONG TERM The Future • Medium Term Goals • Implementation of Oracle Learner Management System when: - E learning integrated - Can be used both from work and outside the organisation • Development of skills in designing e-learning
Final thoughts… Identify high impact driversLaunch subjects that appeal to influential sponsors Think of e learning as more than just content: support learners where possible as you would in the classroom
