Overarching Goal Ensure that UIW’s identity, spirituality and Mission are rooted in hearts and habits of the university.
Some activities intended to deepen our understanding of and encourage involvement in Mission activities include: • Formation activities such as retreat cycles and reunions for staff and faculty. • Annual Mission Journey retreats • December Faith and Leadership retreat • November retreat reunions
Direct and/or collaborative planning of various educational conferences • Spirit and Life Series: collaborative with CCVI’s. Donald Senior, major voice in biblical scholarship. March 11-12, 2004. Fr. Michael Crosby, September 17, 2004. Joyce Rupp, spring 2005. • Genetics and Ethics Conference: raise consciousness about moral, ethical, social justice issues stemming from genomics revolution. Ensure that UIW’s voice is heard on those issues as they evolve into public policy. • Mission conference: Focus on context for and spirituality of missionary activity. Targeted audiences include UIW faculty and students who are in preparation stages for offering workshops, etc., in Tanzania, Zambia, Mexico, and in sites chosen for alternative spring break activities.
Traditions • Heritage Day and Incarnate Word Day activities with particular emphasis on involving more students in the tradition of these days. • Distinguished speaker: Fernando Segovia, “Globalization of Christianity.” 2004.
Incarnate Word Day • UIW celebrates Incarnate Word Day on March 25th. It is the designated “feast day” of the university. The CCVI Spirit Awardee is recognized.
Share the Word • Brown Bag Tuesdays designed for small groups who wish to pray, listen to a speaker or share scripture.
Meet and Greet • “Meet and Greet” is sponsored by the Retreat Advisory Board to offer employees an opportunity to meet one another socially in their work area. It supports the Mission value of developing community.
Insertion opportunities in CCVI history and mission • Experience of early history in Galveston and Houston • Seminar on the UIW Mission in the 21st century
Support for (through budgetary and other means) Mission initiatives springing up aroundcampus. • Mission Anthology • Spring break mission activities • Website • Reach Out Africa • Participation in colloquia dealing with Catholic Intellectual and Social Traditions
Mission Committee Activities • Goal One of Strategic Plan • Alternative Spring Break • Interpretation of Mission Values • Teach-in on effects of homelessness on children • Mission Matters dialogues
Board of Trustees Facilitation of Trustee education so that members will consciously approve policies in accord with the Mission.
