DOE Analytical Services Program 2013 Workshop September 24, 2013 Asheville, NC
DOE ASP 2013 Workshop “Hydraulic Fracturing: History, Myths, Environment and Future Trends”
ASP Outline • Clearing up myths • History of fracking • Today’s practices in fracking • Groundwater isolation (Video) • Current regulatory status on fracking • What does the future hold
Clearing up myths • “Hydraulic fracturing, or frackng, is the process of pumping fluid and sand down a wellbore at high rates and pressures with the end effect of creating a fracture system in the hydrocarbon-bearing rock and allowing a more conductive pathway for the oil and gas to the wellbore.”
Clearing up myths • Fraccing is new and untested technology
History of fraccing • First frac: • Hugoton Field – SW Kansas. 1947 • Klepper #1 • Stanolind Oil & Gas Company • Commercially available 1949 (HOWCO)
History of fraccing • Major changes and developments • Rush to oil (WW II & Arab oil embargo) • Rush to gas (Alternative fuel and CBM credits) • Rush to oil (Shale Gale; Peak Oil and $146/bbl)
History of fraccing • Major changes and developments • QAQC improvements & QC consultants • 3-D Modeling of fractures • Seismic fracture mapping • Multiple-stage fraccing • Rigless completions/Wireline-set plugs • Slickwater technology (Barnett Shale)
Clearing up myths • Fraccing is new and untested technology • Fraccing is a drilling process • Fraccing causes earthquakes
Clearing up myths • We frac into large voids or caverns of oil or natural gas • We use more water fraccing than farming
Clearing up myths • We frac into large voids or caverns of oil or natural gas • We use more water fraccing than farming • Frac fluids contain high levels of toxic chemicals
Clearing up myths • Frac fluids contain high levels of toxic chemicals • Guar gum = cosmetics and food • Acid = muriatic acid for cleanups • Glutaraldahyde = disinfectant • Polyacrylamide = Water treatment/soil conditioner
Today’s Practices • Slickwater • Multi-stage wellbore • Multi-well pads • Extended stays • Horizontal • High Horsepower requirements
Ballard Petroleum LLC Benzel #1-15 (N1) Zone I
Ballard Petroleum LLC Benzel #1-15 (N1) Zone II
Ballard Petroleum LLC Benzel #1-15 (N1) Zone III
Groundwater Isolation • Surface (steel) casing (300 to 1000’) • Multiple casing strings • Cement sheath around each casing • Impermeable rock • Horizontal deposition of rock beds • Design objectives
Current Regulations on Fraccing • Disclosure of chemistry – CO • Trade Secret status – CO • Health professionals notice – CO • Effective – April 1, 2012 • Increased setbacks • Water testing program
Current Regulations on Fraccing • SDWA exemption for fraccing – 1974 • Energy Policy Act of 2005 clarified the fraccing exemption • When the water is flowed back it is subject to SDWA • EPA ruling - late 2014?? • Leave it to the states to regulate – bipartisan agreement
Current Regulations on Fraccing • EPA • BLM • DOT • OSHA • State regs. on disclosure • Crop restrictions, sound barriers, Gasland, etc., etc., etc. . . . . .
What does the future hold? • More shale oil and gas development
What does the future hold? • New basins popping up everywhere! • Utica • SC Kansas • Permian II • Monterey • Tuscaloosa Marine • Mowry • Atoka Shale • Canada (Utica, Bakken, Newfoundland)
What does the future hold? • More shale oil and gas development • Water management improvements
What does the future hold? • More shale oil and gas development • Water management advances • Fluid-less fracs • “Commercial” alternative energy
What does the future hold? • More shale oil and gas development • Water management advances • Fluid-less fracs • Commercial alternative energy • ANWAR
What does the future hold? • More shale oil and gas development • Water management advances • Fluid-less fracs • Commercial alternative energy • ANWAR • Keystone Pipeline • Peaks and Valleys • “ENERGY-BASED ECONOMY”
