E N D
Why is data important • Informs national, regional, and local policy, strategies, and plans • Meeting international reporting obligations • Monitoring and measuring policy effectiveness • Identifying waste service and infrastructure needs and gaps
Why is data important continued… • Designing and implementing new services and monitoring the adequacy of existing services • Providing information for the ongoing delivery of waste management services • Providing education and feedback to users of waste services and other interested parties
The Drivers For Action • Data has gained importance since the introduction of the WMA • Determining effectiveness of waste levy • Many councils are looking at this individually (this could make things complicated and expensive)
Potential solution • Three key elements needed • Definitions and standards (what are we measuring?) • Systems for capturing and consolidating data • Responsibility for providing/recording data
Outcomes sought • Consistent definitions • Standardised systems • Clear roles and obligations • Ability of Central Government to meet international reporting requirements • Improved information for policy/decisions
Progress • Clusters of authorities have already been talking • WasteMINZ has subsequently become involved • Discussions with key stakeholders including… • Industry, government agencies et al.
Path forwards • Proposed application to WMF • WasteMINZ would coordinate the application • Likely two stage (feasibility and then implementation) • Funding needs to come from somewhere! • Strong consultation focus • It’s not going to immediately be the great panacea • Designed with future scalability in mind
