    6. Order the first need of all! Simone Weil God has created order in the universe that Is a reflection of His character and nature and Leads to the fulfillment of His purposes. To have a life that is abundant, one must walk in that order. John Calvin, the Swiss Reformer stated that: It is of great importance to be well convinced of this truth, that a mans life cannot be ordered aright unless it is framed according to the law of God (the Scriptures), and that without this he can only wander in labyrinths and crooked bypaths.[1] [1] Calvin, John, Quoted in Table Talk, (Ligonier Ministries and R.C. Sproul, September 17, 1994)1. 7. Dis-order Dis-order of Atomism/Sexism which crushes women Dis-order of Monism/Feminism which seeks for women to disappear to become like men To deny God and His order is to live within the context of dis-order. We have witnessed the power of dis-order to destroy womens lives. To deny God and His order is to live within the context of dis-order. 8. Flow of Biblical History The Creation The Fall Redemption Proto-redemption The work of Christ Consummation 1.The Creation gives us the glorious thread of Gods good intentions for men and women. 2. The Fall provides the transparent reality of the fall and the consequences of sin in the crushing and disappearance of women. None of the consequences of the fall are to be seen as normative for male-female relations. 3.The Redemption has two parts 1. Proto-redemption 1. As found in the law of God to curb the abuses and create a modicum of justice for women 2. As foretold in Hosea of the restoration of godly male-female relations 2. The work of Christ to lay a foundation for substantial healing in the relationship between women and men. 4. The Consummation, provides the glorious end to the Story when redemption is not only substantial, but it is complete, and history is consumed with the wedding of the lamb.1.The Creation gives us the glorious thread of Gods good intentions for men and women. 2. 9. Distinction Between Being and Function Being: refers to our existence, substance, or fundamental nature. It refers to our being made Imago Dei. Function: refers to purpose, responsibility, or role. In Being, all human beings are equal. In Function men and women are diverse in person, role and function in a way that is complementary. While their functions may be different, they are of equal necessity and value. In Being, all human beings are equal. 10. Three Distinct Models of Social Relationships Sexism begins with inequality of both being and function. Feminism begins with interchangeability of both being and function. Complementariansim: affirms equality of being and diversity of function

    12. The Kind is Man mankind humankind

    13. The Identity The word man: adam Generic term for the human race, humankind, or mankind - female and male Stands in contrast to the particular iysh [eesh]: man (as opposed to woman) or husband ishshah [ish-shaw]: woman (as opposed to man) or wife

    14. The Trinitarian Model Then God said, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule. God reveals Himself as community When He creates in His image, He creates communityGod reveals Himself as community When He creates in His image, He creates community

    15. God is Community He creates in His image community adam (unity): iysh and ishshah (diversity) One man could not completely fulfill the image of God Two men could not completely fulfill the image of God It took Ish and Ishsha to be the image of GodOne man could not completely fulfill the image of God Two men could not completely fulfill the image of God It took Ish and Ishsha to be the image of God

    16. Humankind: The Crown of Creation Imago Dei The high point of Gods creativity. United with the rest of creation in that adam was created. Distinct from the rest of creation in that adam is made from a divine type or pattern for a relationship with the Creator. Men and women are equal. Transition: Men and women are equal. 17. The Imago Dei: male and female are Equal Origin made by God (Genesis 1:26) Imprint of God Himself (Genesis 1:26) Source of identity God named and defined them as male and female (Genesis 1:27) Mandate to create culture and develop the earth (Genesis 1: 26-28) They shall rule

    18. The Imago Dei: male and female are Equal Blessing (Genesis 1:28) Moral and Rational agency Freedom free agency, to obey or disobey Broken communion with God and creation Redemption (Gal. 3:28; 5:1) Hope in Christs return and a rich inheritance in Christ Transition What is the substance of our human nature? What makes us like God?

    19. Imago Dei: Three Facets Has: describes the structural view that man has an image that is like God. Is: describes the relational view that man is community. Does: describes the functional view of what man does - stewards creation.

    20. The Structural View Man is like God!

    21. Mankind: Like and Unlike God Like God: communicable (shared) attributes of God Unlike God: incommunicable (not in common with man) attributes

    22. Gods Incommunicable Attributes Set 1: Exodus 3:13-14; Isaiah 40:28-29 Set 2: Psalm 102:25-27; James 1:17 Set 3: Psalm 90:2; Rev. 1:8 Set 4: I Kings 8:27; Psalm 139 There are ways that God is wholly Other. Those attributes that separate God from His creation are known as his incommunicable ( not in common with man) attributes. There are no analogies to be found in creation. 23. Gods Incommunicable Attributes Self-Existence I AM WHO I AM (Exodus 3:13-14; Isaiah 40:28-29) Unchangeable God never changes (Psalm 102:25-27; James 1:17) Eternal God stands outside of time (Psalm 90:2; Rev. 1:8) Omnipresent God stands outside of the universe (I Kings 8:27; Psalm 139)

    24. Adam is like God Being Human is to be God like and different from the rest of creation Communicable (shared) attributes of God Mind Attributes of Intellect Heart Moral Attributes Will Attributes of Purpose The communicable (shared) attributes of God are those he has shared in some small way with those who are like Him Imago Dei. In these ways we are like God and separated from the rest of the created order. In the following ways God stamped His image into humankind. They include mans mind, heart and will: Mind - Attributes of Intellect Knowledge Truth Wisdom Heart - Moral Attributes Holiness Love Grace Goodness Mercy Righteousness Patience Will - Attributes of Purpose Free Will (Volition) When found in human beings these may be described as internal capital. The ways in which man is like God enable him to function as a steward of creation. It requires internal self government of the mind, heart and will for the external stewardship of creation In short, humankind stands apart from all of the rest of creation in that man possesses the imago Dei.The communicable (shared) attributes of God are those he has shared in some small way with those who are like Him Imago Dei. 27. The Relational View Community The Social View The Divine Community created the human community Required for the Societal Mandate (Genesis 1:28) The Relational View Community This may also be called the social view and is related to the first part of the Creation Mandate to Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth . (Genesis 1: 28) Societal Mandate (Genesis 1:28) The societal mandate to have children and to extend the human family. This means to procreate Gods image and likeness. It means the procreation of eternal beings This stands in contrast to the materialist who would see that having children is creating more mouths to feed. Before the creation of the world, because God is One and Many, there was community, communion and communication. When God created, mankind in His image, He made them for relationship. Because God is Community, the image of God must be community. The essence of this understanding of Imago Dei is community. 28. Complementary: Male and Female His sexuality is not simply a mechanism for procreation which Man has in common with the animal world; it is rather a part of what it meant to be like the Creator. As God is a fellowship in himself (Trinity) so Man is a fellowship in himself, and the fundamental form of this fellowship, so far as Man is concerned, is that of male and female. Paul Jewett The fundamental need is unity-diversity community. Just as there is complementariness (unity of diversity) in the Trinity so there is to be in the human community. This is why to represent the fullness of the imago Dei requires both More than one human being and Female and Male to reflect both the Mother heart and Father heart of God. One human being could not fully manifest the image of God, because to be the image of God demands social relationship. Neither two men nor two women can fully express the image of God, because the Trinitarian Community is Complementarian (equal and different). [1] Jewett, Paul; ?????? page 13-14; Quoted on page 52 in chapter What the Old Testament Says About Women The fundamental need is unity-diversity community. Just as there is complementariness (unity of diversity) in the Trinity so there is to be in the human community. 29. Two Modalities It tells us, too, that it took two different modalities to represent this divine image. It took male and female. Elisabeth Elliot Mark of a Man It takes male and female to reflect the whole nature of God. [1] Elliot, Elisabeth; The Mark of a Man; ??????? pg. 22 It takes male and female to reflect the whole nature of God. [1] Elliot, Elisabeth; The Mark of a Man; ??????? pg. 22

    30. Mother-heart of God: The Eternal Feminine Love: Self-sacrificing Compassion Nurture/Succor Instructor/Teacher The heart of God: responding, intuiting, sensing, perceiving

    31. Father-heart of God: The Eternal Masculine Protector Provider Redeemer-Kinsman Headship: Servant-leader The mind of God: initiates, defines, organizes, brings order, sets bounds

    32. The Family The Trinitarian family: Father, Son and Holy Spirit The human family: Father, Mother, Child(ren) The Human family: Is the smallest relational community is the foundational building block of the larger society: communities, churches and nations. It will take both Male and Female as community to fulfill the Creation Mandate The Human family: Is the smallest relational community is the foundational building block of the larger society: communities, churches and nations. It will take both Male and Female as community to fulfill the Creation Mandate

    33. The Functional View Stewards of Creation

    35. The Functional View Adam: female and male is steward of Creation The developmental view Related to the second part of the Creation Mandate to fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over . (Genesis 1:28) Humankind was made for a function or purpose.

    36. A Shared Purpose The Imago Dei: male and female have the co-responsibility for stewarding creation They have a common origin and a common destiny: Co-create Pro-create Co-rule Vice-Regents Co-steward Developmental Mandate What God had made perfect was not finished yet. There were families to be born, people groups to be established, nations to be built. The imago Dei was to populate the earth. There were seeds to be planted, vineyards to be established, music to be scored, dances choreographed, poems to be written, ballads to be sung, art to be sculpted and painted. Women and Men share the same purpose The woman is not an object. She is not the property of man. She is a subject and equally imago Dei. In Gods design, the responsibilities of pro-creation and dominion are joint responsibilities. What God had made perfect was not finished yet. 37. Mankinds Purpose For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 2:14 Male and Female Man are to function as Gods vice-regents to govern Gods creation in His stead. God is sovereign over creation. His first act, after creating man is to pass functions of His sovereignty to adam to have dominion over the creation. The man and the woman have a common origin and a common destiny to rule over creation. The image of God is to use his internal capital, his intellectual, moral and volitional capacity for a purpose, to develop creation Male and Female Man are to function as Gods vice-regents to govern Gods creation in His stead. 38. Vice-regents Men and women are to function as the Kings and Queens of creation. They are Gods vice-regents, created to rule in His stead.

    39. Imago Dei A Summary We have been made like God (Structural View) to fulfill the Creation Mandate by filling the earth with Community (Relational View) in order to fulfill Gods purpose to develop the earth (Functional View). The heart of what it means to be the image of God is to fulfill Gods Creation Mandate Men and women are equal in that they are in the image of God The heart of what it means to be the image of God is to fulfill Gods Creation Mandate Men and women are equal in that they are in the image of God

    40. The Creation Mandate Create Culture

    41. Family of Words Cult: the worship or reverential homage rendered a divine being. Culture: the temporal manifestation of a peoples faith; religion externalized. Cultivate: tilling and preparing the earth for growth or the culture of the mind, the culture of virtue. The words cult worship, culture and cultivate are all of the same family of words[1] Oxford English Dictionary, 1971; pg. 1246 [2] Grant, George; The Micah Mandate; (Nashville, TN; Cumberland House, 1999) pg. 243 [3] Quoted in Hegeman, David Bruce, Plowing in Hope (Moscow, ID: Canon Press, 1999), pg. 15 [4] American Dictionary of the English Language (1828) 1993 editionThe words cult worship, culture and cultivate are all of the same family of words[1] Oxford English Dictionary, 1971; pg. 1246 [2] Grant, George; The Micah Mandate; (Nashville, TN; Cumberland House, 1999) pg. 243 [3] Quoted in Hegeman, David Bruce, Plowing in Hope (Moscow, ID: Canon Press, 1999), pg. 15 [4] American Dictionary of the English Language (1828) 1993 edition

    42. The Cultural Mandate The mandate is comprehensive Time all of human history Space all of the earth Sectors of society: family, business, governance, science, education, the arts, agriculture, etc.

    43. The Creation Mandate Two Components Domestic (procreate) Public (dominion) function Wholly Integrated Stewardship is comprehensive No Dichotomy Both functions are critical to the fulfillment of the mandate and both require male and female. Both functions are critical to the fulfillment of the mandate and both require male and female.

    44. Corresponding Responsibilities Male and Female each involved in both spheres Each has a primary responsibility and a secondary responsibility: Female is primary in the domestic sphere (procreation) and secondary in the public sphere (dominion) Male is primary in the public sphere (dominion) and secondary in the domestic sphere (pro-creation)

    45. 46. The End of the Mandate Your gates will always stand open, they will never be shut, day or night, so that men may bring you the wealth of the nations their kings led in triumphal procession. The Mandate for the creation of culture is shared equally, female and male, We have seen that all women and men are equal in their being. Now we will turn our attention to their difference in function.
