Chapter 2 Section 5 Correlation and Best-Fitting Lines Joe Zona
Objective: • To be able to determine correlation and fit a line to the plotted data
Correlation • Positive Correlation can be determined if Y tends to increase as X increases
Correlation • Negative Correlation can be determined if Y tends to decrease as X increases
Correlation • No Correlation can be determined if the points show no linear pattern
Best Fitting Line • First Sketch a line that appears to bisect the correlation
Best Fitting Line • Then choose two points on the line
Best Fitting Line • Find and equation of the line that passes through both the points 3 2
Summary • If the points go up, it is positive correlation, if the points go down, it is negative correlation, if there is not specific pattern, it has no correlation. • When finding the best fitting line, draw a line bisecting the correlation and make a equation for the line.
