  2. History ►►►►►►►►►► • Early 1970’s • Rheumatoid Arthritis cases broke out in Lyme, Connecticut • Most were among children • Researchers realized that since most of the kids played outside in woodland areas they would research bugs • Came across deer tick

  5. How do you get Lyme Disease? • Transported by Deer Ticks • Caused by spiral-shaped bacteria called borreliaburgdorferi • can happen to anyone who spends a lot of time outside

  6. How do you know you have it? • The 1st sign is a rash • Other symptoms include: • Fever • Headache • Fatigue • Pain in joints and muscles

  7. Second Stage :Disseminated • Painful swollen joints • Knees more than 90% • Came as fast as 24 hours • Stiff neck • Face can be paralyzed • Bells palsy

  8. How can it be treated? • You can take oral antibiotics Including…… • Amoxicillin (a form of pennicilin) • Doxycycline (a form of tetracycline)

  10. Spread from person to person… • Evidence has proven that it cannot be spread from person to person • If a person with Lyme disease donates blood, then there is a chance that the receiver may get the disease • Lyme disease during pregnancy can’t effect the fetus

The Rash ►►►►►►►►► • Called erythemamigrans (or EM) • Which means “wandering redness” • Lighter in the center where the tick actually bit • Sometimes the rash is just solid red • 6-12 inches in diameter • The bacteria goes into your bloodstream • Can look like a bruise on darker skinned people • Doesn’t appear 30-40% of the time • Feels warm to touch
