Patriots vs. Loyalists 8-2.4
I. Patriots • Patriots were colonists who supported Congress and independence from England. • Most Patriots were wealthy, white men from the Lowcountry. • They created a provisional gov’t (Committee of 99) to run SC during the war. • Many men from SC volunteered to fight in the war in the: • Army. • Militia. • Partisan groups.
II. Loyalists • Loyalists stayed loyal to King George III and England. • More loyalists in SC than all other colonies except NY. • Many volunteered to fight for the British. • Nicknamed Tories by the Patriots. • Many people in the backcountry were loyalists. • Many didn’t believe in the Loyalist cause, they just wanted to be left alone.
II. Loyalists • Patriots and Loyalists from SC fought each other. • Many Loyalists left after the war to Canada or the Caribbean. • Some were fined or kicked out.
III. SC women • Women were on both sides during the war. • They managed the farms and plantations while the men were fighting. • Some were nurses or messengers for the army (very small number).
IV. Slaves • Most blacks were still slaves during the war. • A VERY small number served in the Continental Army. • South Carolinians feared a slave revolt so they vetoed Congress’ request for slaves to serve in the army in non-military jobs.
IV. Slaves • Law was changed that allowed 1/3 of the militia to be slaves, but they couldn’t be soldiers. • Some fought in the partisan groups. • SC did not offer freedom to those slaves that served. • Many slaves ran away to the British to work b/c they did offer freedom
V. Native Americans • Most tribes avoided the war. • Once Americans attacked them, the Indians retaliated. • Most fought with the British b/c they promised to return the land to the tribes. • The Cherokee supported the British.
