KEY PROBLEM • Inability to compete with large capital cities • Few inducements to attract and retain • Large numbers of transitory staff
AIM OF THIS PROJECT • Recruitment and Retention jurisdiction wide • Method • matching area of need & graduate preferences • two intakes per year • dedicated program coordinators & clinical development nurses (in addition to ward based CDNs)
KEY CHANGES IMPLEMENTED • Introduction of part time options • Introduction of EN component (Aug 2006) • Increase in number of CDNs • Increase in relocation subsidy
OUTCOMES SO FAR • RN retention rates • 2005 - 2006 = 87% (n = 50 grads pa) • 2006 - 2007 = 66% (n = 89 large grads pa) • 2007 - 2008 = 95% (n = 79 grads pa) • EN retention rates • 2006 – 2007 = 83% (n = 28 grads pa)
LESSONS LEARNT • Challenges: • Balancing FT/PT rotations • Length of time to finish PT program • Variable CDN requirements
