LARS2 and Fisheries in the LMBthree parts to this talk • Importance of fisheries • Flood pulse concept • River fisheries = food security
Fish Yield Estimates - Mekong • Total 2 million tonnes • Capture Fisheries 1.75 million tonnes(1991 estimate 360,000 tonnes) • Aquaculture 0.25 million tonnes Estimation methods 1. Consumption studies(above figures) 2. Wetland productivity( 150 kg/ha/yr) 3. Landing surveys(difficult)
How big is the Fishery in the LMB ? World capture fishery, marine and freshwater = 92.3 M tonne(FAO 1999 figures) Mekong fishery = 1.75 M tonne Mekong fishery = 1.9% of world capture fishery
What is the value of the Fishery ? value is about $1,400 million
How many people are involved ? 40 million people involved (full- and part-time)
Biodiversity ? 1200 - 2000 fish species – 2rd richest river system in the World
Why such diversity ? • Stream capture in highlands • High diversity in nearby marine environment(91 families in the Mekong) • Habitat diversity along the river
Flood Pulse concept An Overview
Principles of FPC • Lateral exchange of nutrientsbetween flood plains and river channel • Sediment mainly taken to the flood plain (but some the other way) • Primary production is on the flood plain • River is transport system – nutrients, fish dispersal and refuge areas • “Highway” analogy
Important aspect of FPC • Rivers and Flood Plains are one unit
Types of flood pulse rivers • One flood » many floods per year • Predictable » highly unpredictable flood regime • Mekong = unimodal, highly predictable
A predictable, annual flood favours….. • adaptation of organisms (hence contributing to the biodiversity in the Mekong) • primary production on the flood plain • nutrient use efficiency • Which together make possible……..
River Fisheries and food security • River fisheries very important as food • Usually exploited by rural poor, who have few alternative food sources • Important non-commercial trade • Many fisheries have been degraded through river modification works • Now being rehabilitated…Indian example
Three things to remember • Mekong fishery is very important • The annual flood is the primary driver of fisheries productivity in flood plain rivers • Value what we have.....maintain the fisheries for future generations
