Ch. 3 Perceptionof Self & Others
Perception • How do we make sense of out of what we experience? Schemas=mental structures that provide ‘frameworks’ for perception Selection–why do we ‘zero in’ on certain things and not others? Selective perception=personality/likes, etc. bases what we perceive Selective exposure=we put ourselves in situations that reinforce our beliefs/attitudes Example: FOX News generally caters to Republicans, and therefore more Republicans watch FOX News than Dems. Mindlessness (passive, uncritical) & Undue influence (undue importance)
Attribution Theory= we generate explanations for people’s behavior (armchair psychologist!) Remember: Social position/ culture/power position influences how we perceive others. (filter of race/gender/class/religion) Ex: intercultural clash via ‘being late’=one culture’s ‘polite’ is another culture’s ‘rude’.
Perceptual Tendencies (most of which are barriers) • Snap judgments (and stereotyping/overgeneralization) • Focus on the negative • Blame others when things go wrong • Fundamental attribution error (assume it was a controllable cause when maybe was an external one) • Judging others harder than we judge ourselves --self-serving bias --not everyone can be ‘above average’!
You never get a 2nd chance…to make a 1st (or last) impression But…Interaction Appearance Theory = • Our perceptions change (esp about appearance) with interaction!
Improving Perception Skills • What are YOUR perception barriers? • Be mindful • Don’t rush to judgment • Get perceptions of yourself • Verify your perceptions (literally)
