THE CRISIS IN EDUCATION CIRCLE IN KANO By Musa Balarabe Musa, Bsc, M.sc, Community Mobilization and Gender Specialist.
The situation of schools in Kano • Only 10% of children in public primary schools can read, write and do simple maths • Most public school teachers do not keep proper lesson plan and other child records • 75% of our primary school teachers are unqualified or incompetent to teach
The situation continued….. • Insufficient teachers in rural schools and over staffing in urban schools • There are more than 100 pupils per class in 8 metropolitan LGAs • Two third of classrooms in the state have no furniture • Half of the classrooms in the state need emergency renovation
The situations continue….. • Monitoring and assessment of schools and teachers’ performance by SUBEB and LGEAs is not effective due to non implementation of reports by the relevant authorities. • There is gross under funding and underutilization of basic education • Federal and development partners’ funds are not regularly sourced for.
Introduction continued….. • Most community members and teachers’ are not committed to education (western) • Social activities divert children’s attention from learning • Most school environments are not conducive to learning while some do not have the land for permanent structures. • Education sector staff welfare / motivation is very low
The situation continued…….. • Unhealthy competition between public and private schools • Different approach and strategies adopted by IQTE schools • Media not carrying out deeper investigation and broadcast on education • Some CSOs/NGOs pay lip service and unrealistic support to education problems solution due to insufficient funds and skills
The situation continued……. • Many instructional materials provided are insufficient and sometimes irrelevant to our environment • No regular training, re training and development programmes to teachers, school administrators and supervisors and those who attend do not step down what they learnt to others
The situation continued…….. • Need for more schools for new communities and settlements in need • Trespass and land encroachment on school lands • Many children with special needs but no plan to provide them with education • Extracurricular activities neglected in schools
The situation continued……….. • Poor enrolment, retention and completion of Girls up to JSS 3 • What is expected of you as a community member? And what do you think you can do to improve the situation, education in primary school is the foundation of all education, and requires the contribution of all.
