Student Services • We are a university department, separate from the school dedicated to providing student support. • Students can come to us in complete confidence about anything. • We have offices at each site. • If we can’t help, the chances are we know someone who can. Student Services • We provide free, professional support to all University of Brighton students. • All advice is tailored to your individual needs and is impartial. • Any help we provide does not affect your academic record. Student Services StudentServices@brighton.ac.uk

Student Advice Service • Advice on student funding, budgeting, debt counselling • Additional funding: Access to Learning fund (ALF), bridging loans, benefits, tax credits etc • Soon to be launched online Money Matters : www.brighton.ac.uk/moneymatters • International student support – culture shock and personal issues as well as immigration and VISA advice Student Services StudentServices@brighton.ac.uk
Who do we help? • It is a relatively even gender split on who uses the services. • The majority of our users across our services (77–87%) are undergraduates. • Far fewer part-time students use our resources (on average between 5–22%) across the services.
Who do we help? Counselling • The highest proportion of students accessing the counselling service comes from the School of Health Professions (14%). • A disproportionately high age group accessing counselling is the 21–24 year-old group (44%) which comprises 17% of the university population.
Who do we help? Careers • The highest uptake of advice from the Careers service comes from Education (14%), Brighton Business School (12%), Environment and Technology (12%). • Our highest users are from year 1 (45%) followed by years 2 (27%) and 3 (24%) • Some schools make virtually no use of the Careers service: Arts & Architecture, CENTRIM and CLT amongst the lowest.
Who do we help? Student Advice Service (formerly Welfare) • 65% of our home/UK students and 30% of our overseas students have accessed the Student Advice Service.
Who do we help? Disability and dyslexia • 9% of the university population has a declared disability. Of this number, 95% access the DDT services. • Our two highest user groups come from SNAM and Arts and Communications (each comprising 11% of the DDT client base across the university). *Figures from 2007–08
