The MACAT • Identify strengths and weaknesses over time • Determine the impact of capacity development activities
Capacity development • More than training –and developing their technical capacity • Includes developing capacity for political engagement and environmental awareness • Includes ability to influence policy and direct change
Capacity Assessment in Low Income Countries Capacity assessment = process by which the efficiency and effectiveness of the different components of an organisation are measured Capacity = ability of an individual, organisation or system to perform planned functions effectively, efficiently and sustainably in support of its mission and goals (SOGC 2009)

Implementing the MACAT A 3-5 year process which starts with • Data collection = administering the MACAT • Data analysis and interpretation • Development and implementation of interventions • Assessing the impact of interventions = readministering the MACAT
Achievements so far 2003- 2005 administered to 34 associations. • Strengthening Midwves’Association project • Twinning strategy (SLMA and KNOV) 2005 -2008 administerd to 5 association (Cambodia, Vietnam, Haiti, iberia and Burkina Faso) 2010 – Roll out of twinning to 8 countries (MoFA)
Conclusion MACAT - useful tool to initiate organisational capacity development process in low income countries. Stregtnehing the organisational capacity of associations in low income countries is an importnat intervention for the reduction of maternal newborn and child mortality
