Homework due today • Everyone scans “Life in Wood County” • Each person in your group is to select one additional capacity needs paper from the several offered on our angel site. • Scanning these as models for your writing consider: • What sections might your paper include? • What content and for whom? • What design elements? • Come to class prepared to create a template of a Needs Assessment paper together.
Agenda • Today • We’ll take first steps toward GA of CNA • Group work will determine content for the following slides • Our goals: • to reinforce learning how to learn about writing in the public interest • to develop a working draft of our template for a good CNA, making the conventions of this genre transparent • this template will guide my evaluation of your group’s paper, and also serve as a roadmap for content development for your group!
Local Indicators for Excellence in Wood County I selected this as a baseline CNA report because: • It represents a mid-level social system • Its content is delivered in an interesting and helpful way to its audience. • It provides an example of several key ideas presented in this class • Asset based assessment • Indicators gathered help shape evaluation of community life and ways to mobilize • Capacities described provide points of information that help decision makers target where to shape policy and create initiatives
Local Indicators for Excellence in Wood County I selected this as a baseline CNA report because: • It could be improved upon • Its content presents raw data with rationale and synthesis on every page • It’s useful to those who commissioned the report in that they needed baseline measures of 82 quality of life (QOL) indicators in the county.
Activity #1 • What sections does the Local Indicators for Excellence report contain?
Activity #1 • How is each QOL indicator page organized? Strengths/Weaknesses of this strategy?
Activity #1 • What design elements are included in this report? Strengths/Weaknesses of these?
Activity #1: Taken Together • Overall: what basic pieces of information are present in a capacity needs assessment? • What basic design elements are present in these reports?
Activity #2 • Now using the list of sections we’ve determined, let’s look more closely at the structure, content, and design of other reports. • DC group • Sylvan Lake group • Urban AI/AN group • Coastal mgt of Western Indian Ocean group
Activity #2 • What sections are included in each of these report? • What content goes in each section? • What design elements are in each report? • Be prepared to report to the class your findings.
Activity #2 • Now using the analyses we’ve generated, what can we say that a good capacity needs assessment includes?
Activity #2 • Now using the analyses we’ve generated, what do we think our reports should include at a minimum?
Take Aways My goals with these activities were to: Help us reinforce an intellectual strategy we’ve learned earlier (genre analysis). Help us determine the organization, content, and design of our CNA reports. Poise us to develop a template for this paper, one that we can use to shape the content and evaluation of our group’s papers.
Homework • Continue gathering and analyzing data • Write a one-page memo to your group and to me: • Outline what sections, content, and design elements you foresee your version of this report including • Describe what areas of this report you feel most strong about contributing to given your skill sets • Propose a timeline in which you can deliver your contributions
Looking forward • Next class we’ll determine work plans for the completion of this paper • We’ll workshop our templates and • We’ll offer status updates
